The traditional martial arts uniform worn by fighters throughout the Dragon Ball series, with different colors and symbols representing various schools and masters.
The gi is the standard martial arts uniform worn by fighters throughout the Dragon Ball universe. Far more than simple clothing, each gi's color scheme and emblem represent the wearer's training lineage, school affiliation, and personal identity. The gi has evolved alongside its wearers over the course of the franchise, reflecting growth, allegiance shifts, and new chapters in each fighter's journey.
The most iconic gi in the series belongs to the Turtle School, founded by Master Roshi. It features an orange outer layer with a blue undershirt, blue wristbands, and blue boots. The kanji for "turtle" is displayed on the back, and sometimes the front, of the uniform. Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha all wore this gi during their training under Roshi, and Goku continued wearing variations of it throughout his career.
Goku's gi has changed subtly across different arcs to reflect his evolving training. After studying under King Kai, his gi bore the King Kai symbol. He later wore a version without any symbol during the Frieza Saga, and his most commonly seen gi from the Cell Saga onward features the kanji for "Go" (meaning enlightenment or understanding) on the back. In Dragon Ball Super, Goku wears a gi provided by Whis during his training under the Angel, featuring the Whis symbol.
Gohan has worn several different gis, including the Piccolo-style purple training gi during his childhood and a variation of the Turtle School gi during the Cell Games. Piccolo's own outfit, a weighted purple gi with cape and turban, is technically a Namekian combat uniform he can regenerate at will. Vegeta typically wears Saiyan Battle Armor rather than a traditional gi, though he adopted the Whis Symbol Battle Suit during his training. Tien Shinhan and his Crane School gi, as well as Krillin's various orange and maroon uniforms, round out the most frequently seen martial arts attire in the series.
