Gravity Machine

Item

A specialized training device invented by Dr. Brief that multiplies Earth's gravity, allowing warriors to build strength far beyond normal limits. It became a cornerstone of Saiyan training throughout Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super.

Design and Function

The Gravity Machine artificially increases the gravitational pull within a contained space, multiplying Earth's standard gravity by a user-selected factor. Training under these conditions forces the body to work significantly harder for every movement, building muscle density and raw power at an accelerated rate. Once the user returns to normal gravity, they experience a dramatic boost in speed and agility because their body has adapted to operating under far greater strain.

The original model, built into a Capsule Corporation spaceship, could multiply gravity from 1x to 100x Earth's standard. Dr. Brief later constructed an upgraded version for Vegeta capable of reaching 300x. After Vegeta destroyed that unit during a particularly intense session, it was rebuilt with a limit exceeding 400x. A permanent Gravity Chamber was eventually installed within Capsule Corporation headquarters, reaching up to 500x Earth's gravity. The chamber also featured training drones that fired lasers, forcing the user to dodge under the crushing gravitational load.

Key Moments in the Series

Goku was the first to use the Gravity Machine, training aboard his spaceship during the voyage to Planet Namek. While practicing at 50x gravity, the machine malfunctioned and spiked to 100x, forcing Goku to push past his limits. This accident proved invaluable when he arrived on Namek and faced the Ginyu Force.

Vegeta became the machine's most dedicated user, spending countless hours inside the chamber in pursuit of the Super Saiyan transformation. His obsession with gravity training defined much of his character arc during the Android and Cell Sagas. During the Trunks Saga, young Trunks joined his father inside the chamber to prepare for the World Martial Arts Tournament and shocked Vegeta by revealing he had already achieved Super Saiyan at just eight years old.

In the battle against Pui Pui during the Babidi Saga, Vegeta's gravity training proved decisive. When Babidi transported them to Planet Zoon, which had 10x Earth's gravity, Vegeta was completely unfazed, having trained under gravity levels far exceeding that. In Dragon Ball Super, Bulma took over development of the Gravity Chamber, and Vegeta continued using it as his primary training method even as divine training with Whis became available.
