The High Price of Education

Manga ChapterCh. 24

Goku rides to Kame House hoping Master Roshi will take him on as a student, but the old hermit has a very specific tuition fee in mind. Goku goes hunting for a cute girl to bring back, and the result is not exactly what Roshi had pictured for his big date.

Heading Back to Kame House

Fresh from parting with the gang, Goku steers the Flying Nimbus toward his own little house in the mountains first, grabbing supplies before setting off for Master Roshi's island. When he lands on Kame House's tiny beach, the old Turtle Hermit is so absorbed in an aerobics video that he does not even notice the boy walking through his front door. Goku has to yell directly into his ear before Roshi finally spins around and recognizes him.

A Rather Unusual Tuition

Goku explains why he has come. He wants Roshi to teach him the martial arts his grandfather once learned. Roshi, still half watching the television, waves him off and tells him there is food in the fridge. By the time the aerobics video finishes, Goku has inhaled the entire contents of the refrigerator, and Roshi has to face the request for real. The hermit admits he would be willing to train the boy, but training is not free. The fee he sets is peculiar. Goku has to go out and bring him back a cute young woman.

Goku Goes Shopping

The instruction means almost nothing to Goku, whose experience with the wider world is still thin, but he accepts the mission without argument and takes off on Nimbus. Roshi, delighted, scrambles to fix his hair and tidy himself up in anticipation of the date he has been promised.

Not Quite What He Ordered

When the Flying Nimbus returns, Goku is visibly proud of himself. The woman he has brought along is powerfully built, heavyset, and radiating cheerful muscle. Roshi stares in horror at the would-be companion standing on his doorstep, realizing that his new student is going to need much clearer instructions before any training actually begins.
