Let the Training Begin!

Manga ChapterCh. 28

Master Roshi relocates the whole household to a larger training island and gives his two new students their first real test, a straightforward hundred-meter sprint to measure how solid their legs actually are. What Roshi shows them when his own turn comes makes it clear how far they have to go.

Moving Day

Master Roshi announces that Kame House is too small for serious training, so the entire home is going to move. Once everyone is outside, he pockets the whole building in a Capsule. Goku suggests flying to their destination on the Nimbus cloud, but Roshi insists on taking a hovercraft boat, with one firm warning to Launch not to sneeze during the trip. When they arrive at the new training island, Goku promptly ignores the work ahead and zips off on Nimbus to scout the place from the air. He comes back to report that there are other houses and other people living here, and Roshi confirms that roughly three hundred residents share the island.

The Hundred-Meter Test

Before any real training can begin, Roshi asks Krillin about his martial arts background. Krillin cheerfully reports eight years at the Orin Temple. Roshi decides the first measurement he wants is a simple hundred-meter sprint, not to test pure speed but to check the stability and strength of each boy's legs. Krillin steps up first, boasting about his Olympic-caliber feet, and clocks in at 10.4 seconds. Goku runs next and finishes at 11, then immediately asks for a do-over because his broken shoes have his toes sticking out the front. In fresh footwear he sprints again and clocks an effortless 8.5.

The Master Shows Them Up

Roshi pulls off his massive turtle shell, hands the stopwatch to Krillin and takes his own turn. The old man runs the hundred in 5.6 seconds and is not even impressed with himself, calling it nothing special for a human being who has broken past his limits. He tells the boys that with real training they should easily clear five seconds before long.

A Beer Run Becomes a Chase

Roshi asks Goku to grab him a beer, and since Goku has no idea what a beer is, Krillin volunteers. Inside the house, Launch sneezes while he is at the fridge and comes after him with a butcher knife. Ducking behind a rock outside, Roshi calmly tells Goku that Krillin is already very close to reaching the human barrier.
