The main bracket finally opens with a grotesque first match. Krillin squares off against Bacterian, a towering slob whose entire fighting style leans on smells, fluids, and every other foul weapon a human body can produce, and Goku shouts the punchline that turns it around.
The World Tournament Announcer steps into the center of the ring and reminds the packed arena that the overall winner will walk away with a prize of 500,000 zeni. The high priest of the host dojo offers a short greeting to the crowd, and then the first battle of the main bracket is called at last. Krillin is waved forward to face Bacterian, a towering and revolting heap of a man who has earned his reputation at this tournament on sheer disgust rather than technical skill. The tiny Turtle School student shuffles into position looking less than thrilled about the matchup he drew in the backstage sorting.
Bacterian throws the first punches of the fight, which Krillin dodges without much trouble given the massive size difference between them. Realizing his fists are not landing on the quick little monk, the giant switches tactics to his signature style and starts weaponizing his body. He forces Krillin to inhale his breath, belches in his face, and follows that with a move so crude it cannot be printed in polite company. Overcome by the smell, Krillin crumples to the ring floor and the announcer starts the official ten count. To cement his advantage, Bacterian simply lets loose on his downed opponent without a hint of shame.
From the sidelines Goku shouts the piece of trivia that turns the entire match around: Krillin has no nose and cannot actually smell any of it. Emboldened, Krillin jumps back to his feet and resumes the attack. Bacterian tries one last trick by spitting at him, which Krillin sidesteps with ease before knocking the giant flat and unleashing a payback blast right in his face to win match number one cleanly.
