The second preliminary match of the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament puts Yamcha against the mysterious Jackie Chun. The desert bandit brings his full arsenal, including the Wolf Fang Fist, but the old stranger ends the bout with a single dismissive gesture that stuns the entire arena.
The chapter opens in the aftermath of Krillin dispatching Bacterian, with Goku and his friend still laughing about the finish. The two scan the crowd hoping to spot Master Roshi, but the old Turtle Hermit is nowhere to be seen. Goku insists that his nose is picking up a familiar scent somewhere close by, yet he cannot locate the source. As the pair step down from the ring, the announcer calls for the next bout, pairing Yamcha against the unknown fighter Jackie Chun. Bulma, watching from the sidelines, remarks that this Jackie looks surprisingly charming for an old man, while Yamcha wonders aloud where a competitor of that caliber has been hiding, having never once heard the name on the martial arts circuit.
Jackie Chun pauses to compliment Krillin on his earlier showing before strolling casually to the stage. Once the match is signaled, Yamcha reads his opponent and quickly concludes that the old fighter is unnervingly relaxed. He opens with a crisp combination of punches and kicks, testing the counterplay, but every strike slides past Jackie as if the old man were made of smoke. Chun then scolds him for throwing sloppy, wasteful motion. From the crowd, Goku tugs at Krillin to come watch, sensing something special, while Puar and Oolong fidget with worry.
Determined to settle the fight, Yamcha launches his signature Wolf Fang Fist, but Jackie slips through the flurry without effort. Stepping forward, the old master sweeps one arm and releases a concentrated burst of air that lifts Yamcha clean off the tiles and deposits him outside the ring. The announcer, the crowd, Goku, and Krillin are all speechless. Krillin in particular looks sick, because this inexplicable old fighter is now scheduled to meet him in the next round.
