Three years later, Master Roshi and his students fly to Papaya Island for the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. Roshi sneaks in a secret Jackie Chun registration, a rival sage named Shen arrives with his own deadly disciples, and a taller Goku finally turns up after swimming across the planet.
Three years have passed, and a chartered plane carries Master Roshi, Yamcha, Krillin, Bulma, Oolong, Launch, Puar, and Turtle toward Papaya Island and the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. The group bickers about who has improved the most, while Bad Launch grumbles that airplanes always tempt her to try a midair hijacking. Roshi badgers a stewardess about the bathroom and later emerges with loud commentary on his struggles, much to Bulma horror. A cab ride follows and the group finally reaches the tournament grounds in time for registration.
At the sign-up desk, Roshi asks whether a boy named Goku has registered yet and is told no one by that name has arrived. Slipping away while the others are distracted, Roshi quietly enters the tournament under the alias Jackie Chun and warns the official to keep the secret. Moments later his lifelong rival Master Shen sweeps in with Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu in tow. Shen mocks the Turtle School, boasts that his disciples are destined to win, and trades biting insults with Roshi before storming off. Roshi tells his curious students that Shen has been his rival since long before any of them were born.
With only a minute left to register, Yamcha orders Puar to transform into Goku as a desperate backup. Right as the plan takes shape, Launch spots the real Goku walking up in fresh clothes with his tail fully regrown. He notices how much Bulma has matured, then explains that he swam across the planet from Yahhoy because Roshi told him not to use the Flying Nimbus. The friends quickly change into their Turtle School uniforms and head into the competition hall while Roshi slips into his Jackie Chun disguise and watches as the announcer reveals that only eight of the one hundred eighty-two hopefuls will advance past the preliminaries.
