Jackie Chun faces a suddenly serious Tien Shinhan in the World Martial Arts Tournament quarterfinals. After surviving the blinding Solar Flare and a stolen Kamehameha, Jackie stuns the crowd by voluntarily stepping out of the ring, quietly passing the torch to the next generation of fighters.
Jackie Chun taunts Tien Shinhan about his master, the Crane Hermit, and Tien warns that he will regret those words. Tien declares it is time to get serious, shocking Jackie, who assumed his opponent was already at full strength. Krillin suspects a bluff, but Tien proves otherwise. He raises his hands in front of his face, fingers splayed wide, and announces the Solar Flare, a new Crane School technique. A searing flash of light erupts across the arena, blinding everyone not wearing sunglasses. With Jackie unable to see, Tien drives a knee into the back of his head, sending the old man to the floor. The announcer begins counting.
Goku and Krillin slowly recover their vision as Jackie drags himself upright at the count of five. Tien is surprised the old man survived such a clean hit. Jackie jokes about his aging eyes, then asks Tien why a talented fighter like him follows someone as corrupt as the Crane Hermit, urging him to choose the light over the shadow. Enraged, Tien charges and lands a kick to Jackie's face, yet Jackie keeps talking. The Crane Hermit studies Jackie closely and finally realizes his true identity: Master Roshi in disguise. He relays the secret to Tien through telepathy. Tien then stuns the arena by winding up and firing a massive Kamehameha, a technique he copied after watching it performed just once. Jackie catches the blast with both hands and deflects it skyward to protect the audience, but Tien dismisses this as a basic counter.
Jackie delivers one last speech about walking a righteous path. Then, without warning, he strolls to the edge of the ring and hops out of bounds, forfeiting the match. The crowd erupts in confusion. Jackie climbs back in to grab his jacket and walks backstage, ignoring Tien's demands for an explanation. The Crane Hermit assumes his rival was afraid, but Tien senses something deeper behind the gesture. Backstage, alone with his thoughts, Jackie wonders what kind of era is dawning, content to let the younger fighters carry things from here.
