The Volleyball Play

Manga ChapterCh. 129

Tenshinhan tosses Goku up and turns him into a volleyball with the absurd Haikyu-Ken. When Goku stands back up unshaken and declares he has been fighting at "match use power" only, the true final begins and the three-eyed warrior admits he has never felt so alive in combat.

The Haikyu-Ken

Ready to end the match, Tenshinhan flips Goku high into the air and spins to face the opposite direction with a theatrical flourish. He calls out the name of his newest move, the Haikyu-Ken, presses his palms together, and rushes beneath the falling boy. "One!" comes the first count, as the back of Tenshinhan's wrist bumps Goku straight up again. "Two!" as he lifts his hands overhead and sets the Turtle School's champion in the air like a volleyball waiting to be spiked. "Attaaack!" With that, Tenshinhan leaps, winds up, and smashes Goku back down into the ring with bone jarring force. Goku lands limp and motionless, looking utterly finished.

Match Use and Battle Use

Then, to everyone's astonishment, Goku simply kicks himself upright as though nothing happened. Tenshinhan compliments the boy's durability, but Goku tells him it is time to stop holding back. Puzzled, Tenshinhan presses for an explanation, and Goku cheerfully admits he has only been using his "match use power" so far. Since it looks like Tenshinhan actually intends to kill him, he is ready to switch to his "battle use power." The three-eyed warrior shrugs off the distinction and beckons him on. Goku then dashes in and unloads on him with a sharp punch to the face, a fist driven deep into his stomach, and a follow-up kick that sends Tenshinhan skidding across the tiles. Before he can recover, Goku flashes under him and boots him hard from below, launching him skyward.

A Held Kamehameha

Tracking his airborne opponent, Goku sets his palms and starts a Kamehameha, only to cut the chant off just before releasing it. Tenshinhan thumps back to the ring and pauses to gather himself, telling Goku how extraordinary this feels, that no previous fight has ever pushed him like this. From his spot by the wall, Kuririn groans at the missed opportunity, but the old master explains that firing the blast then would have squandered the energy for nothing, since Tenshinhan was already regaining control of his descent. On the ring, Goku calmly blocks a returning elbow and the final settles into its true form.
