Up in the Air

Manga ChapterCh. 134

A mid-air headbutt sends Tien Shinhan and Goku plunging off the Tournament grounds, and a passing truck ultimately decides the championship. After Tien accepts victory, the friends regroup backstage only to stumble onto a horrifying scene: Krillin lies dead, killed by an intruder who stole the Four-Star Dragon Ball and the fighter registration list.

A Championship Decided by a Truck

Goku rockets upward on the thrust of his reverse Kamehameha and slams his head straight into Tien Shinhan's stomach. Both fighters tumble off at an angle, soaring away from the ruined arena and out over the surrounding city. Having drained himself firing the blast, Goku can barely control his descent. The announcer pops open a capsule to reveal a tiny shark-themed vehicle and zips after them to keep calling the bout. Goku manages one small Kamehameha pulse to boost his altitude, drawing excited reactions from Yamcha, Bulma, Puar, and Launch listening on a hospital radio. Then a truck abruptly crosses Goku's flight path, bouncing him off its roof and slamming him into the pavement. Tien crashes seconds later, and the announcer declares Tien Shinhan the new world champion.

Reunion and a Scream

After the dust settles the announcer bids the audience farewell until the next tournament in three years. Goku borrows Krillin's shredded dogi since his own clothes are ruined. Tien offers to split the prize purse, but Goku waves off the money, and Tien admits his win came down to fortune. Roshi suggests the whole group celebrate with a meal, and Krillin warns Tien that feeding Goku tends to ruin wallets. Goku then remembers he still needs to retrieve his grandpa's Dragon Ball and the Power Pole from the waiting area, and Krillin volunteers to fetch them. Roshi invites Tien and Chiaotzu to train at his island, and Launch loudly endorses the idea, confessing she has fallen for the wild fighter. Tien politely declines, saying they remain students of the Crane School regardless of recent events.

Murder Backstage

A sudden scream tears through the air from inside the waiting room. Goku recognizes Krillin's voice and everyone rushes inside. The announcer is injured but conscious and whispers that a monster stormed in, snatched a strange ball along with the tournament roster, and vanished. Roshi puzzles over the theft as Goku cries out that Krillin is no longer breathing. Their friend has been murdered.
