Consumed by rage over Krillin's murder, Goku races off on the Flying Nimbus to hunt the killer. Master Roshi identifies a symbol left at the crime scene as the mark of King Piccolo, a long-sealed demon recently freed by Pilaf. The villain schemes to collect the Dragon Balls for eternal youth and systematically exterminate every tournament finalist.
Master Roshi urges Goku to keep his head clear, but the boy is beyond reasoning with. Krillin was his closest friend, and the loss drives him to leap aboard Kinto-Un and tear off after whoever committed the crime. Oolong discovers a scrap of paper near the body stamped with a strange insignia, and Roshi recognizes it immediately. The mark belongs to King Piccolo, a name the old hermit had hoped never to speak again. He gathers the group and explains the terrible history behind the symbol while everyone tries to absorb what they have just witnessed.
Years ago a martial artist called Mutaito devoted his life to stopping the demon's rampage across the world. After countless failures he discovered a sealing technique powerful enough to trap King Piccolo inside an ordinary rice cooker, though the effort cost him his own life. Roshi personally carried the container out to sea and sank it, believing the threat was buried forever. Somehow the vessel has been opened, and the demon has returned to finish what he started long ago.
Roshi wonders why the assassin bothered to carry off the Dragon Ball and the tournament registration sheet. The scene shifts to Pilaf's floating fortress, where the freshly revived King Piccolo explains his plan to his underlings. He intends to gather every Dragon Ball and wish for the return of his lost youth. Beyond that, he has ordered the murder of every finalist from recent World Martial Arts Tournaments, reasoning that eliminating the strongest fighters now will prevent anyone from learning the Evil Containment Wave and sealing him away a second time. Back on the trail, Goku finally closes the distance on Tambourine, the winged demon who killed Krillin.
