Yajirobe's Prey

Manga ChapterCh. 139

Goku encounters a brash, pudgy swordsman named Yajirobe while a dragon-like spawn of King Piccolo named Cymbal arrives to seize a Dragon Ball. After settling who gets to fight the monster with a game of rock-paper-scissors, Yajirobe draws his katana, slices Cymbal in half, and proceeds to roast the creature for dinner.

A Three-Way Standoff

Goku realizes this new monster is not the same creature that killed Krillin. The beast, Cymbal, one of King Piccolo's spawned offspring, spots the Dragon Ball hanging around Yajirobe's neck and demands it. Goku connects the dots quickly: this monster must be allied with the one who murdered his friend. Yajirobe, however, has no intention of handing anything over, and Cymbal announces he will simply pry the ball from a corpse. Both Goku and Yajirobe want the honor of fighting the creature, so they settle the dispute the only way that makes sense to them: a round of rock-paper-scissors. Yajirobe wins.

Cymbal Falls

Yajirobe charges at Cymbal with a wild punch, but the agile dragon-spawn leaps over the strike and smashes the swordsman across the face with his tail. Cymbal follows up with a hard punch that sends Yajirobe tumbling. The monster assumes the fight is over, but Yajirobe pops right back up, more annoyed than hurt. He declares that this bizarre creature is going to be his next meal and launches himself at Cymbal with a vicious kick to the jaw. Enraged, Cymbal extends his palm and fires a bolt of electricity. The blast stings, but Yajirobe shrugs off the pain. He pulls his katana from its sheath, surges forward, and cuts Cymbal cleanly in two with a single stroke. Far above in Pilaf's airship, King Piccolo senses the death of his spawn.

Dinner and Introductions

Yajirobe wastes no time. He builds a fire, skewers Cymbal's remains over the flames, and begins roasting the carcass. After tasting a piece, he pronounces it delicious and devours the entire thing. Goku waits patiently for him to finish before asking for his name. Yajirobe insists on hearing Goku's name first. Goku introduces himself as Son Goku, and the swordsman responds that he is Yajirobe, a wandering monk. The unlikely pair now find themselves sharing a campfire in a landscape that is about to get far more dangerous.
