Bulma cracks Raditz's scouter and uses it to measure everyone's battle power, revealing the scattered strength of Earth's fighters. Yajirobe arrives with orders from Korin: Kuririn, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chiaotzu must all report to Kami's Lookout for divine training. Six months fly by as both groups grow stronger, and Gohan transforms from a frightened child into a resourceful survivor.
Chi-Chi and the Ox-King speed across the ocean toward Kame House, Chi-Chi furious that Gohan has been gone all night without doing his homework. At the house, Bulma has spent the entire night working on Raditz's scouter and finally gets it functioning. She wakes everyone with a machine gun blast and begins testing. Kame-Sen'nin registers at 139, and Kuririn comes in at 206, delighting him that he has surpassed his master. Kame-Sen'nin insists the device must be broken.
Bulma detects a reading of 250 roughly three thousand kilometers away, which Kuririn guesses is Tenshinhan. A 177 in another direction turns out to be Yamcha. The strongest signal, 329, belongs to Piccolo, and Bulma notes that Gohan is with him. Kuririn asks if they should intervene, but Kame-Sen'nin says there is nothing they could realistically do.
Yajirobe appears at Kame House with an urgent message from Korin. Kuririn, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chiaotzu must all come to Korin Tower immediately to receive training from Kami himself. Even Yajirobe has been drafted, though he makes it clear he is not thrilled about fighting powerful aliens. Before leaving, Yajirobe adds one more detail: Uranai Baba passed along Goku's request not to be wished back yet, since he is training in the afterlife.
Another air car arrives carrying Chi-Chi and the Ox-King. Kame-Sen'nin dreads the conversation. Chi-Chi demands to know where Goku and Gohan are, and the group reluctantly explains everything. She faints upon hearing that Piccolo has taken her son and that Goku is dead.
Time passes quickly. Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chiaotzu, Kuririn, and Yajirobe all undergo intense daily training under Kami. Goku is still running along Serpent Road, seemingly no closer to its end. And Gohan has grown tougher. The same dinosaur that once terrorized him now poses no threat. The boy dodges its charge with ease, slices off a piece of its tail for meat, blasts a log to kindle a fire, and roasts his meal using his sword. Piccolo watches from afar, quietly impressed.
