Gohan flies back with the Four-Star Dragon Ball only to cross paths with Vegeta. Through quick thinking and a convincing lie about the Dragon Radar, Gohan manages to keep the ball hidden. Meanwhile, Vegeta discovers that his own hidden Dragon Ball has been stolen and races back to the cave, only to find it empty.
With Vegeta gone, Krillin and Bulma stand near their cave assessing the situation. Bulma laments that everything is lost now that Vegeta has taken their Dragon Ball. Krillin reassures her, explaining that the ball Gohan went to retrieve was actually one that Vegeta himself had hidden, so the Saiyan prince still will not have a complete set. High above, Gohan is flying back toward the cave with the Four-Star Ball when he detects a massive ki signature. He recognizes it immediately as Vegeta.
Vegeta senses Gohan as well. Thinking fast, Gohan suppresses his energy and ducks behind a rock formation. Vegeta, knowing someone is nearby, threatens to obliterate the entire area if the person does not reveal themselves. Gohan sets the Dragon Ball down out of sight and steps into the open to face the Saiyan prince directly.
Vegeta informs Gohan that he already took the Dragon Ball from Krillin. He then notices the Dragon Radar strapped to Gohan's wrist and asks what the device is. Gohan lies, telling him it is just a watch. Vegeta scoffs at Earthlings for lacking the technology to make a smaller timepiece. He asks whether Goku is on Namek, then drives a knee into Gohan's chest before flying off without further interest.
Though injured, Gohan retrieves the Dragon Ball and returns it safely to Krillin and Bulma. The three agree that they need to abandon their cave immediately, since Vegeta now knows their location.
Vegeta flies to the spot where he submerged his own Dragon Ball underwater, but when he dives down, it is gone. He pieces together the truth in an instant: Gohan stole it, and the so-called watch is actually a device that tracks Dragon Balls. Furious at being outwitted, he rockets back to the cave at full speed. He arrives to find it completely deserted. Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma have relocated to a narrow chasm on a distant island. As Bulma grumbles about their increasingly rough living conditions, Krillin announces his plan to take Gohan to Grand Elder Guru's house.
