Young Gohan enters the ring against Perfect Cell, and the bio-android quickly discovers that the boy is far tougher than he appears. After battering Gohan through a mountain, Cell is shocked to see him walk out of the rubble virtually unscathed. Gohan pleads with Cell to stop fighting, revealing that he despises violence, but warns that his rage makes him dangerous beyond measure.
Everyone is stunned by the intensity of Gohan's power-up, except for Goku, who watches with a calm smile. Cell concedes that Goku was right about the boy being strong but insists it was an exaggeration to claim Gohan could defeat him. He proclaims that Goku's miscalculation will cost his son his life.
Cell lands and turns his full attention to Gohan. He opens with a kick, but Gohan blocks it cleanly. Cell charges again; Gohan leaps out of the way. Cell pursues with another kick, and Gohan dodges that as well. Cell closes the gap, grabs Gohan by the shirt, and delivers a vicious headbutt followed by a punch to the face. He hurls Gohan skyward and unleashes a kiai blast that sends the boy smashing through a series of mountains.
Krillin and Future Trunks watch in horror. At home, Chi-Chi faints while watching the fight on television alongside the Ox-King. Jimmy Firecracker announces that a young boy has tragically lost his life, lamenting the interruption right when everyone was due for a lunch break. Piccolo rounds on Goku, blaming him entirely and declaring that his naivete has killed his own son.
Goku tells Piccolo to calm down and pay attention to Gohan's ki, which has not dropped at all. Cell demands that Goku eat a Senzu Bean and return to the fight. But Goku tells Cell to turn around. Cell looks over his shoulder to find Gohan walking calmly out of the rubble with barely a scratch on him.
Cell stares in disbelief. Gohan tries to convince Cell to stop, explaining that the battle has no purpose. Cell laughs, insisting the Cell Games are full of meaning: for him it is entertainment, and for the warriors it is survival. Gohan responds that he simply does not enjoy fighting or killing. Cell mocks this, claiming Gohan could never destroy him. Gohan explains that the reason his father chose him is the explosive rage buried inside him; when pushed too far, he loses all control. Cell interprets the warning as a bluff and decides to deliberately provoke Gohan's anger, punctuating the decision with a fist to the boy's face.
