Gohan arrives at the battlefield radiating a completely different kind of energy. After learning that Buu killed everyone, including his mother and Dende, Gohan walks up to the monster with calm fury and delivers a declaration that leaves everyone stunned: he does not intend to fight Buu, he intends to kill him.
A tremendous ki races across the sky. Piccolo initially mistakes the approaching figure for Goku, but Goten quickly corrects him. It is Gohan, and when he lands, even Piccolo barely recognizes him. His facial features have subtly shifted, and the composition of his energy is entirely different. The softness that once characterized his ki has vanished, replaced by something harder and more refined. Gohan explains that Supreme Kai saved his life and that he has been training in the Sacred World of the Kai ever since.
Trunks delivers the grim news: Majin Buu turned every person on Earth into candy and devoured them. Chi-Chi, Dende, everyone is gone, and with Dende dead, the Dragon Balls have turned to stone. Buu taunts that they were all delicious. Gohan bristles with anger but then senses a faint ki somewhere in the distance, filing the observation away. He turns to face Buu and walks forward with deliberate calm.
Buu asks whether Gohan actually intends to fight him. Gohan stares him down and responds flatly: he does not plan to fight. He plans to kill. Buu laughs at the bravado, reminding everyone that he already beat Gohan once before. Piccolo thinks there is no way Gohan can win, and the boys start preparing the Fusion Dance just in case.
Without further warning, Gohan erupts with power and launches into Buu. He lands a devastating punch to the face, follows with a kick, blocks a counter, drives another kick home, slams his fist into Buu's gut, and then boots the monster skyward. Gohan pursues and hammers Buu back toward the ground with a vicious downward kick. Buu crashes hard and frantically scans the sky for his opponent, but Gohan is nowhere in sight. Then Buu hears a voice directly behind him. He whips around to find Gohan standing there, smirking, and calmly calling him a fool. Piccolo, Trunks, and Goten stare in open-mouthed disbelief at what they have just witnessed.
