Buu, now powered by Gotenks and Piccolo, overwhelms Gohan in a brutal one-sided fight. As Gohan struggles, Old Kai sacrifices his own life so that Goku can return to the living world. Meanwhile, in a separate twist, King Yemma reveals he kept Vegeta's soul intact for exactly this kind of emergency.
Buu wants to finish quickly, knowing Gotenks' fusion inside him has a time limit. Gohan throws a kick, but Buu catches his leg. He tries the other leg, and Buu grabs that one too, leaving Gohan dangling. Gohan fires a blast from his free hand, but Buu dodges by leaning his head back. He threads his elongated forelock between his own legs, wraps it around Gohan's neck, and drags him through so they are back-to-back. Buu whips around and punches Gohan across the landscape, following with a massive blast that Gohan barely dodges.
Buu pursues and taunts him. Gohan charges with a kick, but Buu bends backward into a full somersault, catching Gohan with a rising kick. He then binds Gohan in Gotenks' Super Donut Chain and laughs about using a friend's technique against him.
In the Sacred World of the Kai, Goku fears Gohan will die. Old Kai admits he never anticipated Buu absorbing the boys and offers to give his own life so Goku can return to the living world. Kibito protests a god dying for a mortal, but Old Kai insists Buu will come for them all eventually. Supreme Kai volunteers instead, but Old Kai says he is too young; the old man only has about a thousand years left anyway.
Buu charges a Kamehameha. Gohan shatters the Donut Chain and narrowly avoids the blast. In Other World, King Yemma reveals he kept a certain warrior's soul intact for exactly this emergency and has given him a body. He instructs Fortuneteller Baba to deliver the fighter to Earth. Vegeta smirks at the irony of being called upon to play hero.
Old Kai bids farewell and collapses. Goku's halo vanishes, confirming his return to life. The old man promptly sits up again, now with his own halo, and tells Goku to hurry before the sacrifice becomes pointless.
