Demon beasts from Planet Ankoku, a world of total darkness in the deepest corner of the universe. The Ankoku-seijin feed on light energy and possess retractable arm blades, making them dangerous predators. Yakon, servant of Babidi, is the most well-known member.
Planet Ankoku exists in perpetual darkness, far removed from any star or source of illumination. The creatures that evolved there, the Ankoku-seijin, adapted accordingly. They are large, insectoid demon beasts with green skin, sharp claws, and retractable blades embedded in their arm bones that extend outward for close-range combat. Their feet are prehensile, allowing them to hang upside-down from cave ceilings like bats, a behavior that suits their lightless homeworld perfectly. They are classified as magical creatures, placing them in the same broad category as other supernatural beings in the Dragon Ball universe.
The most distinctive ability of the Ankoku-seijin is their capacity to consume light energy. On a world with no natural light, this ability is paradoxically useless at home but devastatingly effective elsewhere. An Ankoku-seijin can drain the luminous aura of a ki-wielding opponent, feeding on the energy output of their attacks and transformations. However, this ability has a critical and fatal limitation: if an Ankoku-seijin absorbs more light energy than its body can contain, it will literally explode.
Yakon is the only Ankoku-seijin to play a significant role in the series. Recruited by the wizard Babidi as one of his elite warriors during the Majin Buu Saga, Yakon was stationed at Stage 2 of Babidi's spaceship, tasked with defeating anyone strong enough to pass the first floor. When Goku drew the assignment, Babidi transported them both to Planet Ankoku, thinking the home-field advantage of total darkness would give Yakon the edge. It did not.
Goku transformed into a Super Saiyan, flooding the arena with golden light. Yakon eagerly devoured the energy, forcing Goku back to his base form. Rather than retreating, Goku simply transformed again and deliberately poured out even more energy. Yakon, unable to resist the feast, gorged himself beyond his body's capacity and exploded. It was a clever, almost casual victory that demonstrated Goku's tactical thinking as much as his raw power. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, a Future Yakon also appears in Future Trunks' timeline as a member of the future Organization of Babidi, only to be slain during the confrontation with Future Trunks, Future Shin, and Future Kibito.
Beyond Babidi's organization, the Ankoku-seijin have connections to the Frieza Force as well. In the Resurrection 'F' manga, a member of this race appears among Frieza's soldiers during the invasion of Earth, confirming that the species was not exclusively tied to Babidi's magical recruitment. Their size, natural weaponry, and magical nature make them useful as frontline fighters for any organization willing to employ them. Despite their fearsome appearance and unique abilities, the Ankoku-seijin ultimately serve as a reminder that even the most specialized predator can be undone by an opponent who understands the limits of its greatest strength.
