The Metalmen are a species of living metal beings from Planet Galactic, known for their liquid metal bodies and a peculiar emotional vulnerability. Despite being nearly indestructible physically, Metalmen can be defeated through insults alone, as harsh words cause them to lose their will to fight and literally melt into puddles. Auta Magetta, who fought in the Universe 6 tournament, is their most famous representative.
Metalmen are among the most physically resilient species in the Dragon Ball multiverse. Their bodies are composed entirely of living metal, giving them extraordinary durability and the ability to withstand attacks that would destroy fighters made of flesh and bone. They can generate intense heat from their bodies, expelling lava-like streams of molten metal as both offensive weapons and defensive barriers.
Their appearance is robotic, with thick, blocky frames that resemble industrial machinery more than biological organisms. Despite this mechanical look, Metalmen are fully alive and sentient, with their own personalities, emotions, and social structures. They communicate through a series of metallic clanging sounds, a language that sounds like pots and pans crashing together but carries full linguistic meaning among their kind.
For all their physical toughness, Metalmen possess one of the most unusual weaknesses in all of Dragon Ball: they are devastatingly sensitive to insults. When a Metalman is called names or spoken to harshly, they become emotionally devastated, losing their fighting spirit and even their ability to maintain their solid form. This is not a figure of speech. Verbal abuse can cause a Metalman to physically wilt, shrink, and become unable to continue fighting.
Auta Magetta brought the Metalman species into the spotlight during the Universe 6 vs Universe 7 tournament arc in Dragon Ball Super. Selected by Champa as one of Universe 6's five fighters, Magetta faced Vegeta in one of the tournament's most memorable matches. The fight initially went poorly for Vegeta, who struggled against Magetta's incredible heat-based attacks and seemingly impenetrable defense.
Magetta's fighting style relied on turning the arena into an oven. He generated so much heat that the barrier surrounding the fighting stage trapped the thermal energy, creating conditions that sapped Vegeta's stamina while Magetta himself thrived. His lava spit attacks added ranged offensive capability to his already formidable close-quarters durability.
Vegeta eventually discovered Magetta's weakness almost by accident. After calling him a "piece of junk" in frustration, Vegeta noticed that Magetta immediately lost his composure and became unable to fight effectively. The Saiyan prince exploited this mercilessly, defeating the otherwise nearly invincible Metalman with a combination of insults and a Final Flash that knocked him off the arena platform.
Magetta later appeared in the Tournament of Power alongside Botamo, with the two fighting as a team. This pairing addressed Magetta's emotional vulnerability by having Botamo cover his ears so he could not hear insults, a creative tactical solution that made the duo surprisingly effective until they were eventually eliminated.
The Metalmen represent one of Dragon Ball Super's most inventive additions to the franchise's roster of alien species. Their combination of extreme physical power with extreme emotional fragility creates a species that is simultaneously fearsome and endearing. Magetta's tearful reactions to Vegeta's trash talk became some of the most comedic moments in the Universe 6 arc.
Their home planet, Galactic, remains largely unexplored in the series. What we can infer is that Metalman society likely operates without the kind of verbal aggression common in other cultures, since harsh language would be functionally debilitating to their entire population. A civilization of beings who cannot tolerate insults would necessarily develop very different social norms around communication.
Auta Magetta is the only named Metalman in the Dragon Ball canon. His appearances in both the Universe 6 tournament and the Tournament of Power established the Metalmen as a species worth remembering, primarily because their greatest weakness is so wonderfully absurd. In a franchise built on power levels and transformations, the idea that a nearly indestructible warrior can be defeated by calling him names is pure Dragon Ball humor at its best.
