Depths is the ninety-eighth chapter of the Tokyo Ghoul manga. Kaneki's overconfident push against Shachi backfires badly, Eto shatters the Yasuhisa twins' illusions about Kanou, and the doctor finally reveals a captive Rize to the battered protagonist.
As Shachi rises again, Kaneki warns him against writing him off and hammers the older ghoul with a barrage of deadly kagune strikes across his body.
Facing Eto, Nashiro and Kurona hear her dismantle their fantasy: no matter how they protest, Kanou is not their father and their real parents are gone. Treating the doctor as a stand-in, she argues, is pointless, and she asks whether they can truly accept living inside such a hollow, showy world, insisting Kanou merely exploits their grief. Enraged by her words, the sisters scream at her to be quiet. Moments later Banjou arrives, and Eto tears out his ribs.
Kaneki tries to devour Shachi and fails, which only incenses the man he had dared to belittle. Shachi seizes Kaneki by the face and slams him down through the structure with tremendous force, leaving him briefly helpless. As Kaneki drags himself back upright, Kanou greets him from a raised platform where Rize is being held captive.
Eto confronts the Yasuhisa twins and rips out Banjou's ribs. Kaneki's attempt to cannibalize Shachi backfires, and Shachi drives him down through the building. Kanou then reveals the imprisoned Rize Kamishiro from atop a platform.
Found in Volume 10, the chapter is titled 深層 in Japanese, romanized Shinsō, and released in English as Depths. It ran in issue 2013-45 on October 10, 2013. Nanao Yasuhisa and the twins' mother are referenced but do not appear.
Titled "Depths," Chapter 98 shows Kaneki attacking Shachi with a barrage of kagune strikes while Eto confronts the Yasuhisa twins, ending with Dr. Kanou revealing a captive Rize to a battered Kaneki.
In Chapter 98, Eto tells Nashiro and Kurona that Kanou is not their real father, that their true parents are gone, and that treating him as a substitute is pointless because he is simply exploiting their grief.
