Chapter 216

Pinned and beaten, Hitoshi Shinso replays the plan he never ran: catch Izuku Midoriya with the scarf. He regrets never showing his rival what he has become, yet he can see both classes pushing past their ceilings. Slammed down and captured, he concedes that the Hero Department is something else. Round Five closes perfect at 4-0 for Team 5-A, and Midnight calls the exercise over with thanks to everyone. Class 1-A takes the overall win, celebrating while 1-B swallows the loss.

Hitoshi tells the teachers he is unhappy with himself, since nothing he managed came off his own strength, and admits he had worked out that this exercise was his audition. Asked how, he points to the timing and the shape of it: the format let him try his abilities with no special arrangements, and he alone fought twice.

The finalists gather for feedback. Shota Aizawa presses Izuku on the new Quirk that came out of One For All and how it works. Izuku scrambles internally, unable to give the real answer, while Fumikage Tokoyami and Shihai Kuroiro muse over the ebony mass born from darkness. He allows that he did not choose to unleash the tendrils, describes the power overflowing until he went berserk, and admits he was terrified of hurting someone. The credit, he says, belongs to Ochaco Uraraka and Hitoshi. Midnight praises the pair in her usual register, Mina Ashido adds that Ochaco physically latched onto Izuku to hold him together, and both go red while Ochaco says doing nothing was not an option. Shota recalls her stated wish to save more people and commends how far she has come.

Hitoshi cuts the mood by admitting he acted for himself, not from kindness or on anyone's orders, wanting only a clean win. Shota lays into him, then turns it around: the Hero Course is full of people grinding for this, and nobody helps anyone without the will to move on their own. That, Shota says, is what a hero looks like. Izuku praises the showing and the edge the new gear gave him, privately feeling he has not become dependable yet. Vlad King then announces that Hitoshi joins the Hero Department at the start of his second year. Stunned and quietly fulfilled, Hitoshi listens as everyone argues over which class gets him.

Neito Monoma, lost bet and all, has not changed. He insists 1-B lost on paper only, brags about what he now knows regarding Izuku's Quirk, and spirals into claiming he could win a rematch, while Vlad tells him there will be none because class is over. Izuku wonders how Neito learned anything at all. Yui Kodai watches him unravel until Shota interrupts and asks him to come by the 1-A dorms to see Eri.

The Joint Training Battle ends with Class 1-A winning overall and the fifth round finishing 4-0.

Hitoshi Shinso is cleared to enter the Hero Course from his second year, class undecided.

A brief flashback puts a teenaged Aizawa and Present Mic beside a fluffy-haired classmate.

Shota asks Neito Monoma to come and visit Eri.

Thirteen pages, published February 9, 2019 in issue 11 and collected in volume 23. It closes the arc's battle and was split across the anime, pages 1 to 10 in Episode 99 and pages 11 to 13 in Episode 100.

The cover assembles Izuku, Hitoshi, Ochaco, Neito, Denki Kaminari, Momo Yaoyorozu, Juzo Honenuki, Tenya Ida, Pony Tsunotori and Katsuki Bakugo. The unnamed classmate glimpsed in the flashback is Oboro Shirakumo, a thread picked up later. Kohei Horikoshi's comment complains about a cold that has hung on for over three weeks.
