Jorul

Jorul was a giant whose enormous mustache and beard cascaded all the way to the ground, the shape calling to mind a waterfall. Over a plaid shirt he wore a ring of triangular, tooth-like points, encircled in turn by a dark belt whose buckle bore the Giant Warrior Pirates' skull emblem. A fur cape marked with spiral patterns sat on his shoulders. His legs looked small relative to his towering height, and he dressed them in dark pants.

Warriors earned Jorul's esteem; he praised Hajrudin for training toward leadership of the Giant Warrior Pirates. Children too he cherished, giving thanks for them at a feast. Yet he held the customs of Elbaph as sacred, and when young Linlin shattered them and wrecked the village, he judged that even a child's offenses have limits and moved to end her life. Branding her a devil in a child's shape, he tried to strike her down, a choice that killed him. Dying, he still urged his fellow giants to render judgment on her. Like others in the series, he had his own laugh: "Zabababa."

Jorul and Jarul once led the Giant Warrior Pirates together and fought side by side across three centuries before setting the title aside and being honored as heroes among the giants. About 105 years ago the pair witnessed King Harald pledge to make amends for old wrongs and to gather knowledge of the world's many cultures to carry home to Elbaph. Six decades and one year before the story begins, the two visited the Western Village to eat semla alongside the youngsters of Sheep's House. A 12-day Winter Solstice fast then commenced, but on its seventh day a child of that same household, Charlotte Linlin, tore through the village in a food-crazed frenzy.

Despite Carmel's pleading and the girl's youth, Jorul raised his sword, calling her an evil spirit wearing a child's form. Linlin snapped the blade with her bare hands, seized him by the beard, and drove him into the earth, wounding him fatally. His parting words asked the giants to bring judgment upon her; medical aid came, but his advanced age gave him no chance of recovery. The devastation and his death turned giants worldwide against Linlin, and Jarul, though grief-stricken and enraged, spared her out of respect for Carmel. Jorul was buried on a hilltop beyond the ruined village, his broken sword and helmet, patched with tape, standing as his marker. Because he died the year that saw Prince Loki's birth, giants came to regard Loki as a "Cursed Prince."
