Appearance

Even among giants Jarul is staggering in scale, reaching roughly twice Brogy's height and rivaling Loki. Age shows in every detail of this elderly warrior, from the horned Viking helm he wears to the colossal beard that drapes over most of his frame and rises into the shape of a mountain, the source of his nickname. A dark feathered coat completes the look. The most striking feature, however, is grim: fourteen years ago, while opposing a possessed Harald, he took the legendary blade he had once gifted the king straight through his skull, and the sword has remained lodged there ever since.

Personality

Jarul prizes the warrior's code above all, reminding Elbaph's young giants that they are fighters first, yet he is broad-minded enough to have embraced Carmel's gospel of trading raids for honest commerce and to have backed Harald's dream of a peaceful, war-free future for his descendants. Loyalty and conviction run deep in him; he mourned Jorul's undignified death and could not forgive Charlotte Linlin for it, only sparing her out of respect for Carmel. When the Knights of God held children hostage, he tearfully ordered the Walrus School and Owl Library burned to save them, then grieved the loss of that heritage even though lives had been spared. He also stood alone in defending Loki against execution, knowing the prince killed Harald only out of mercy. His laugh rings out as Bojajaja.

History

For three centuries Jarul and Jorul captained the Giant Warrior Pirates before passing the name to Dorry and Brogy. Both were present a hundred and five years ago when Harald vowed to atone and to gather the world's cultures for Elbaph, and Jarul personally gifted the king the legendary sword he carried for life. Sixty-three years back the pair joined a feast at Sheep's House, where Linlin's craving-driven rampage during the fast fatally wounded Jorul; Jarul moved to slay the sleeping girl but relented at Carmel's plea. The pivotal tragedy came fourteen years ago: summoned to Aurust Castle, he and Loki found Harald impaled by his own guards yet kept alive by newfound immortality. Harald revealed the World Government's scheme to enslave Elbaph, begged that Loki eat the sacred Devil Fruit, and ordered his own death, then lost control and turned on them, driving his sword through Jarul's head before Shanks and Gaban intervened. Loki dealt the final blow, vowed everyone to silence to protect Harald's memory, and left to challenge the government, leaving Jarul to shield him from the regicide charges. In the present-day Elbaph Arc, the elder survives with the blade still in his skull, hosts the Straw Hats, and warns Luffy of Nika's place in prophecy. When the Knights of God invade anew and seize ten children, he reluctantly orders the school and library destroyed, but then seizes a Den Den Mushi to deliver a stirring, carefully edited account of Harald's fall, clearing Loki, demonizing the government, and declaring all of Elbaph's warriors at war with the World Government.
