Natural Born Destroyer

The flashback opens on Elbaph's shore, where parents leave a young Charlotte Linlin behind under a false promise to come back, then sail off admitting they are casting out the daughter whose destruction had her banished from their homeland. Night falls and she sobs for them. A hundred years earlier, the surviving members of the Giant Warrior Pirates faced execution until Sister Carmel stepped forward, warning the Marines that their deaths would ignite a war between giants and humans, and vowing instead to lead the giants toward a world of coexisting races. From that mission grew the Sheep's House on Elbaph, a refuge for lost children of every kind.

Decades on, the elderly Carmel takes Linlin in, and the girl is overjoyed to find a home scaled to her enormous body. Her raw power keeps causing ruin: she crushes a bear with a single strike and tries to pull off a Longarm's joint and a Fish-Man's fin, yet Carmel pardons her each time and urges the others to do likewise. When the twelve-day Winter Solstice fast deprives her of the semla she adores, her craving boils over into a rampage that sets a village ablaze and topples giants. Sickened by it, the giant Jorul condemns her as beyond redemption and lifts his sword against her, deaf to Carmel's pleading.

The cover confirms that Cavendish once held princely rank in the Bourgeois Kingdom. The Emperor's childhood is depicted, including her unnatural size from birth and her exile to Elbaph at age five over the wreckage she left behind. Mother Carmel receives her formal introduction as the keeper of the orphanage, and young Hajrudin and Stansen are shown. Jarul and Jorul, billed as the two oldest giants alive and the onetime captains who once led the Giant Warrior Pirates, debut, and Linlin's hunger sickness lays waste to a village.

This chapter is part of the Whole Cake Island Arc. Her craving first surfaces at a banquet, and the fast meant to honor the rebirth of the sun overwhelms her by the seventh day. Loki is said to be born roughly ten months after she arrived on the island. Even when her efforts end in catastrophe, Carmel commends her kind heart, while the giants come to regard her as an unstoppable menace.
