Roundness defines his silhouette, and a rack of meat is rarely absent from his grip. Goggles ride permanently over his eyes, and of all Shanks' crew he has weathered the years with almost no visible aging. No matter how dire the moment, even watching Shanks square off against Whitebeard, his face holds a contented grin. His wardrobe runs to a green tee striped vertically in white, a matching headband, short pale trousers cinched by a dark green sash, and fur-trimmed green shoes. A yellow coat with a furred collar and red, black-striped epaulets hangs cape-style across his shoulders.

Easygoing and quick to enjoy himself, Roux is often paired with his crewmate Yasopp and clearly ranks among the captain's most trusted hands, turning up whenever something pivotal happens. His appetite borders on legendary; the manga shows him draining an entire barrel of sake solo while the crew drinks at Makino's bar. Through the Marineford war he kept on grinning with meat in hand, breaking that habit in only a single scene. He is, by his own crew's account, hopeless around women. For all the levity, he is the man whose pistol shot first established that a pirate's road runs through real danger.

His officer's rank gives him command over lesser members and marks him as a fighter the World Government and Marines treat as genuinely notorious. He turns his bulk into a weapon through a technique called Self-Bowling, tucking into a ball to roll or be hurled by an ally, and despite his girth he once crept up on a mountain bandit unseen, his leg muscles being both powerful and limber. He wields Armament Haki, handles a flintlock pistol, and as the crew's chef carries the job of feeding everyone aboard. Roux hails from the South Blue and signed on with the Red Hair Pirates more than nineteen years ago, a stretch during which the crew found the infant Uta inside a looted chest and, thirteen years back, seized the Gomu Gomu no Mi from a guarded World Government ship. He defended Shanks by shooting a bandit who drew on him, stood with the crew through Marineford and the funeral for Ace and Whitebeard, and later sailed the waters near Wano. In the Final Saga he helped escort Marco to Sphinx, reached Elbaph, and prepared to clash with the Kid Pirates and the Barto Club.
