Makino

Of average height with brown eyes, Makino wears her hair, black in the manga and dark green in the anime, cropped to just past her shoulders. Her introduction a decade before the main story showed her in a yellow kerchief, an orange black-sleeved blouse, a long pale-blue skirt, and orange sneakers, and later outfits tend to echo that early look. Around the time she taught Ace manners she switched to a sleeveless white top over a pink-striped shirt. In her appearance twenty-two years before the present, her headscarf was yellow and pulled lower across her brow. After the timeskip she is drawn wearing what looks like a wedding ring, a detail absent from the anime.

A well-loved fixture of Foosha Village, Makino is warm-hearted and always ready to lend a sympathetic ear. Her bond with Luffy runs deep; she fed him as a boy under the running gag of a "treasure tab" and has filled the role of an adoptive mother or older sister, cheering on whatever dream he chases so long as he stays happy and surrounded by friends. She kept track of his exploits after he set sail and was shaken to learn how badly he grieved Ace's death. She shared a fond rapport with Ace, who once turned to her to learn proper manners, and was close to Sabo, growing deeply distressed at news tied to him. Despite Dadan being a bandit, Makino treats her as a regular and is one of the few who stays friendly with her, even bravely shielding Garp from Dadan's anger after Marineford. She is also a close friend of Shanks and his Red Hair Pirates, and frequently stands beside Woop Slap as the one villager willing to hear out the old mayor.

Twenty-two years ago, a young Makino told Woop Slap that Garp had headed for the mountains. She entered the main story twelve years back, serving Luffy, Shanks, and the Red Hair crew at Partys Bar, and was one of only two villagers brave enough to approach the bandit Higuma after he seized Luffy. During Ace and Luffy's childhood under Dadan, she brought the boys clothes, delivered imported ale to the hideout, and helped a flustered Ace rehearse how to introduce himself to Shanks. She also watched Luffy push off in his little dinghy when he finally left home.

Across the sagas she followed his rising fame. When Luffy's first 30 million berry bounty reached the village, she was working at an inn as the townsfolk cheered until Woop Slap called it shameful. She remarked on his growing crew at the 300 million mark, and after the Marineford war she stopped Dadan from striking Garp, insisting he suffered most over Ace, only to break into tears and flee when Dadan named Luffy instead. During the timeskip she gave birth to a child, seen in her arms as the village celebrated Luffy's return. Later she shut her bar for a day over troubling news about Sabo, and in the Egghead Arc she agreed Garp would survive his disappearance while noting her baby had begun recognizing Luffy's face in the newspapers.
