Wolf (Scientist)

An elderly figure, Wolf wears his grey hair slicked straight back and dresses in a garishly patterned aloha shirt, short trousers, and a red sun visor. At the moment Law first crossed paths with him, that wardrobe of shirt, shorts, and sandals seemed wildly mismatched against the harsh winter gripping Swallow Island.

Wolf weighs a person by the labor they contribute and counts on anyone he helps to repay him later, a principle he boils down to the phrase "Give and Take." Underneath that bargaining exterior lies a warmth he struggles to conceal. Pride runs deep in him: he calls himself a genius even though most of his gadgets arrive packed with grave defects, which earned him the nickname Mr. Junk Inventor from Law. Despite his age he proved tough enough to give blood transfusions to two boys one after another and remain awake, and years on he could still best a team of Law, Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin all at the same time. A crack shot with a rifle, he is also a formidable hunter.

Wolf came across a near-dead, thirteen-year-old Law asleep inside one of Swallow Island's caves, carried him home, and let him stay on the condition that he work. The boy soon brought back a polar bear mink named Bepo, and a month later two badly hurt youths, Shachi and Penguin, whom Wolf saved with his own blood since their type matched his. The four boys grew up under his roof doing chores and odd jobs, with Wolf even punching the boys' exploitative uncle and turning the relatives over to the law. When Wolf was gravely injured testing a flying machine, Law operated on him using the Ope Ope no Mi, and afterward Wolf privately warned the boy never to reveal the fruit's immortality-granting power. Touched that Wolf valued him beyond his "give and take" code, Law accepted the old man's offer of unconditional friendship.

Three years on, a pirate crew terrorized Pleasure Town, and its captain turned out to be Wolf's own son, Artur Bacca. Confessing his past, Wolf explained that he had once sailed with Bacca to keep him in check, only to watch the boy grow crueler before destroying the town years earlier. Armed with Wolf's giant telescope and a secret submarine able to tunnel through any surface, the group infiltrated the pirates' camp, routed most of the crew, and Law ultimately downed Bacca with Countershock. Wolf moved to kill his son but stopped when Law spoke of Rosinante's death at Doflamingo's hands. In the end Wolf gave Law the submarine, soon renamed the Polar Tang, and the boys departed as the newly formed Heart Pirates, after which Rudd later showed Wolf a newspaper trumpeting their North Blue exploits.
