Worst of the World - The Scary Scientist Caesar

Tashigi recalls a recent wave of vanished children, incidents she notes are typically filed away as mishaps at sea or pirate work. Tracing the implication, Smoker says aloud that someone within G-5 must have masked the disappearances. His soldiers loudly proclaim their loyalty, but he waves the suspicion off, reminding them that no institution is spotless and that they ought to expect less from the Marines. He orders a third of the unit to steal a vessel and carry word of the incident, while he remains to retrieve the heart and frame Law swapped away. Inside, Caesar wins clearance to kill, since Joker will dress any death up as one more accident on the water.

Trussed up and certain Law will free him, Brownbeard tells the crew how the Sabaody rookies and Blackbeard came to be called the Worst Generation, then recounts the island as it was under Dr. Vegapunk. A chemical weapon trial went disastrously awry, flattening two of three labs and spilling heat and poison that paralyzed the discarded test subjects. Caesar reached the island, scrubbed the air clean, and restored their movement; Law followed and grafted living animals' limbs onto the men, which is the origin of the centaurs and other hybrids. Smoker separately tells his subordinates that this same blast was Caesar's handiwork, that Caesar served as deputy, was jailed, then escaped a prison ship through his power.

The centaur Caesar pledged to heal starts choking as the scientist grills him like a guinea pig for his new medicine, then kills him over an unsatisfying answer. Challenged by Monet on the failure, Caesar boils over, swearing his experiments never miss and that he annihilated the whole island on purpose, set on proving to the World Government that no living scientist outranks him. No later installment attaches the Gold Roger execution prologue to the We Go! opening; this one is the final case. The Worst Generation picture mirrors the Volume 51 cover with Blackbeard inserted, and the anime widens the pre-ruin views of Punk Hazard while drawing out Caesar's cackle.
