Chapter 285: Capriccio

Usopp tumbles off the Ark Maxim with the unconscious Sanji in tow, landing on a bed of cloud not far from Nami, who is overjoyed to find them whole. Spotting the towering beanstalk, she works out that they are hovering above Shandora and pulls Usopp onto her Waver to round up the others. Up on the faltering Maxim, Enel curses the meddling crew yet takes comfort in spare systems, among them long-extinct Jet Dials from his birthplace of Birka, and feeds the vessel power straight from his own body. Meanwhile Aisa steers Luffy, who rolls along atop the golden orb fused to his arm, toward the great stalk. Reaching Shandora, they find the spot empty, and Luffy drops Aisa and Pierre down to Robin, who snatches them with her Devil Fruit. Once she confirms the god is bound for the Golden Belfry, Luffy scrambles upward after him as Nami arrives with the limp Sanji and resolves to chase her captain while the rest make for the Going Merry.

Amid the wreckage of the golden city the crew comes back together. Sanji's sabotage fails to ground the ark, since Enel falls back on reserve measures and his own electricity, and he reveals that Birka once relied on dials and that the now-vanished Jet Dials keep the Maxim aloft. Luffy starts up the beanstalk after the god while the others aim to regroup at the Merry and Nami pursues him alone. Their ships gone, the White Berets resort to dial boats to clear Angel Island. Enel at last sets Deathpiea in motion, calling down bolts of lightning across the sky island.

The cover continues Ace's Blackbeard search, with him raiding the seemingly bottomless spread in the G-2 canteen. The chapter reached the screen in Episode 186. Its title returns to the arc's musical motif: a capriccio is a loose, spirited piece, echoing how Enel must now improvise his ruin after the crew's interference.
