Yuuji Hakamada's Dragon Ball Z work preceded his Super contributions, directing episodes across multiple sagas including the Cell Games, Other World, Great Saiyaman, World Tournament, Babidi, Majin Buu, Fusion, and Kid Buu Sagas. His Z episodes covered critical moments from Gohan's pleading against Cell through the Spirit Bomb's triumph over Kid Buu.
