Future GohanSon Gohan is the eldest child of Goku and Chi-Chi, and one of the most naturally gifted fighters in the Dragon Ball universe. Unlike his father, Gohan struggles between his scholarly ambitions and his warrior heritage, a tension that defines his character across every saga in which he appears.
Gohan is thrust into the world of combat at the age of four when his uncle Raditz kidnaps him. After Goku sacrifices himself to defeat Raditz, Piccolo takes the young half-Saiyan under his wing for a grueling year of wilderness survival training. This unlikely mentorship forges one of the series' most important bonds and transforms Gohan from a sheltered child into a capable fighter who holds his own against Nappa during the Saiyan invasion.
On Planet Namek, Gohan's latent power surfaces in critical moments, particularly when his rage triggers explosive bursts of energy against Frieza's forces. However, his defining moment comes during the Cell Games. With his father choosing to step aside, Gohan is forced to confront Perfect Cell alone. The death of Android 16 and Cell's torment of his friends finally break Gohan's restraint, unleashing Super Saiyan 2 for the first time. The resulting power overwhelms Cell completely, and Gohan finishes him with a one-armed Kamehameha after Goku provides spiritual encouragement from the afterlife.
Following Cell's defeat, Gohan focuses on academics during the seven years of peace, attending high school as the Great Saiyaman. He falls in love with Videl, Mr. Satan's daughter, and trains her in ki manipulation. When Majin Buu emerges, Gohan travels to the Sacred World of the Kais, where Old Kai performs a lengthy ritual to unlock his full potential without the need for transformation. This "Ultimate Gohan" form proves devastating but is ultimately insufficient against Super Buu after the villain absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo.
Gohan's fighting style is rooted in Piccolo's teachings, blended with Saiyan combat instincts and later refined through Goku's guidance. His signature technique is the Masenko, a two-handed energy blast taught by Piccolo, though he also masters the Kamehameha from his father. In dire situations, Gohan can channel his rage into massive power surges that temporarily exceed his normal limits.
His Ultimate (Mystic) form, awakened by Old Kai, allows Gohan to access his maximum potential without relying on Super Saiyan transformations. This makes him one of the most efficient fighters in the series, as he can maintain peak output without the stamina drain associated with higher Super Saiyan stages. In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Gohan unlocks an even more powerful state called Beast, characterized by red eyes and white hair, which places him among the strongest warriors in Universe 7.
Gohan's arc is unique in Dragon Ball because it directly challenges the series' central theme of endless combat. Where Goku lives to fight, Gohan would rather live in peace. This creates a constant push and pull: the universe keeps demanding that Gohan fight, while he keeps trying to put down his fists and pick up his textbooks. His decision to become a scholar rather than a full-time warrior disappoints Goku on some level, but it also represents Gohan staying true to himself.
As a father to Pan and husband to Videl, Gohan demonstrates that strength can take many forms. His willingness to step up when the people he loves are threatened, combined with his preference for a quiet life, makes him one of the most relatable characters in the franchise. The Beast transformation in Super Hero symbolizes Gohan finally reconciling these two halves of his identity: the gentle scholar and the ferocious protector.
