Makoto Kino / Sailor Jupiter

Makoto keeps her wavy chestnut hair swept into a ponytail with a green tie and rarely appears without pink rose earrings. Unusually tall for a Japanese schoolgirl, she stands above every other Inner Guardian and carries a slightly more muscular frame than her friends. Her wardrobe shifts season to season, from the long-sleeved uniform of her old school to casual jackets, jerseys, denim, and summer outfits, and by the final season she wears the same high school uniform as Usagi, Ami, and Minako.

As Sailor Jupiter she wears a white leotard with chest armor, a dark green collar and choker, a dark green skirt beneath a puffy white belt, and soft pink bows at the front and back. Short dark green boots, white gloves capped with green fittings, and three shoulder pads round out the fuku, while a gold tiara holds a green stone that can stretch into a lightning antenna when she summons her power. Her Super Sailor Jupiter upgrade adds a heart to the front bow, a star to her choker, a longer back bow, and a translucent, winglike final shoulder pad.

Makoto reads as a tomboy at first glance, a girl whose height, strength, and fighting ability lead others to keep their distance and to assume she was expelled from her last school for brawling. She trains in karate and treats raw strength as her calling card, pushing herself harder whenever she feels weak, and her temper flares when someone she cares about is wronged, as when she scatters the boys tormenting Ami over rumors of cheating. Underneath the toughness sits a warm, domestic spirit that loves cooking, gardening, flower arranging, and handicrafts, and dreams of marriage and a shop selling flowers and cakes. Her loyalty to Usagi never wavers. For a long stretch she measures every crush against a senior who once dumped her, a habit she mostly sheds after Minako confronts her about it.

Orphaned young when her parents died in a plane accident, Makoto grew up alone and self-reliant, becoming a gifted cook and forming close ties with a boy named Shinozaki and an aspiring novelist, Tomoko Takase. A rejected confession and the heartbreak that followed helped drive her transfer to Juban Middle School. She bursts into the story around the twenty-fifth episode by thrashing a group of boys who were harassing Usagi, and soon after, while trailing the arcade regular Crane Game Joe, she is caught in a battle with Zoisite. When Joe is turned into the monster Gamecen, Luna recognizes her as a guardian, and the phrase "Jupiter Power, Make Up" lets her become Sailor Jupiter and weaken the creature with Supreme Thunder.

Across the R season she loses and regains her memories, briefly falls for the alien Ail, and unleashes Supreme Thunder Dragon against a cardian with the Moonlight Knight's help. The Black Moon chapter pits her against the electricity-wielding Petz, whom she battles with Sparkling Wide Pressure. In the S season she is smitten with Haruka Tenou before learning her secret, has her heart crystal drawn out by the Daimon Scar, and clashes bitterly with Uranus and Neptune over their cold methods, later steeling herself under a monk's training. The SuperS episodes bring her reunion with Tomoko, her upgrade to Super Sailor Jupiter and the mightier Super Supreme Thunder, and a rift with Minako over a shared crush that mends once the pair gain their Crystal Change Rods and fight side by side.
