Babidi is a diminutive and treacherous alien sorcerer who sought to revive the ancient monster Majin Buu, continuing the work of his father Bibidi. Despite having virtually no combat ability of his own, Babidi's mind control magic and manipulative intelligence made him one of the most dangerous threats the Z Fighters ever encountered.
Babidi inherited his father Bibidi's ambition to control Majin Buu and use the creature as a weapon of universal destruction. Bibidi had originally created (or summoned) Buu millions of years ago and used him to obliterate most of the Supreme Kais before being killed. Buu's sealed cocoon remained hidden on Earth, and Babidi spent years gathering loyal servants and devising a plan to collect enough energy to break the seal.
His scheme relied on his signature ability: Manipulation Sorcery. By exploiting the darkness and evil within a person's heart, Babidi could take control of their mind, amplifying their power while bending their will to his own. He used this technique to recruit powerful warriors like Dabura, the King of the Demon Realm, and later Vegeta. The Majin mark, an "M" symbol that appeared on the foreheads of his victims, served as both a brand and a conduit for his control.
Babidi's plan to gather energy for Buu's revival took the form of a staged tournament aboard his spacecraft. He pitted his controlled fighters against the Z Fighters, specifically targeting those whose battles would generate the most energy. The fighting between Gohan and Dabura, and later the manipulation of Vegeta, produced enormous outputs of combat energy that fed directly into Buu's cocoon. When Majin Vegeta and Goku's battle generated the final surge needed, Buu was revived.
Babidi's relationship with Majin Buu immediately became unstable. While Buu was childlike and obedient at first, he chafed under Babidi's constant demands and abusive treatment. Babidi, who had no real power of his own, relied entirely on the threat of resealing Buu to maintain control. He berated Buu, insulted him, and ordered him around like a servant, never understanding that the creature he was commanding was not a weapon but a sentient being with feelings.
This mistreatment, combined with Mr. Satan's unexpected influence on Buu, led to the inevitable conclusion. Buu killed Babidi by punching his head off and blasting the remains, ending the wizard's schemes permanently. In a fitting irony, the monster Babidi had spent his entire life trying to control was the one who destroyed him, motivated not by heroism but by simple annoyance at being told what to do.
Babidi's legacy in the Dragon Ball narrative is primarily as a catalyst. He was responsible for corrupting Vegeta into Majin Vegeta, one of the most dramatic character moments in the franchise. He revived Buu, whose rampage led to some of the most emotionally intense episodes in Dragon Ball Z. And his own death demonstrated a recurring theme in the series: that those who seek to control power through manipulation inevitably become victims of the very forces they tried to command.
