Dende is a young Namekian who serves as the Guardian of Earth, having been appointed to the role after the previous guardian, Kami, fused with Piccolo. Originally encountered as a frightened child on Planet Namek, Dende grows into a wise and dependable overseer of Earth's Dragon Balls.
Dende first appears during the Namek Saga as one of the youngest Namekians in Grand Elder Guru's village. When Frieza's forces begin massacring Namekian settlements to collect the Dragon Balls, Gohan and Krillin rescue Dende from Dodoria's squad. Grateful for their intervention, Dende guides them to Grand Elder Guru, who unlocks the hidden potential within both Earthlings. Dende's healing abilities prove invaluable during the battles on Namek, as he repeatedly restores the Z Fighters' strength during their confrontations with Frieza.
After the Namekians are relocated to New Namek, Goku recommends Dende as Kami's successor. Despite his youth, Dende accepts the responsibility and recreates Earth's Dragon Balls with enhanced capabilities, including the ability to grant two wishes instead of one. As Guardian, Dende watches over the planet from the Lookout alongside Mr. Popo, providing guidance and support during the Buu crisis, the events of Dragon Ball Super, and Dragon Ball Daima.
Dende occupies a unique position in the Dragon Ball cast as a non-combatant whose contributions are nonetheless essential. His healing power, which can fully restore a wounded fighter in seconds, has turned the tide of multiple battles. His stewardship of the Dragon Balls means that the series' central wish-granting mechanic depends entirely on his continued safety and well-being.
As a character, Dende represents the gentler side of Namekian culture. While Piccolo and Nail embody the Warrior Clan, Dende belongs to the Dragon Clan, a lineage devoted to spiritual pursuits and creation rather than combat. His maturity, empathy, and sense of duty make him an ideal guardian, and his enduring friendship with Gohan and Krillin connects him to the Z Fighters on a personal level despite his removed position atop the Lookout.
