Role and Significance

Shenron is arguably the most important non-combatant entity in Dragon Ball, as the entire premise of the series revolves around the Dragon Balls and the wishes he grants. The quest to gather the seven spheres and summon this mighty dragon drives the plot of the original Dragon Ball and remains a recurring narrative device throughout Z, Super, and GT. Shenron can grant a wide range of wishes, including resurrecting the dead, transporting people across the universe, and even altering the physical state of individuals.

However, Shenron's power is not unlimited. He cannot grant wishes that exceed the power of his creator, he cannot kill beings who are stronger than the creator, and he cannot grant the same resurrection wish for the same person more than once. Under Dende's stewardship, Shenron was upgraded to grant two wishes (later three), and the Dragon Balls' recharge time was adjusted. Despite his fearsome appearance and thundering voice, Shenron is notably intimidated by Beerus, the God of Destruction, and has been shown nervously granting wishes in the deity's presence. Shenron has been killed and restored multiple times throughout the series, reflecting the cyclical nature of the Dragon Balls themselves.
