Zarbon is one of Frieza's most trusted elite officers, serving as a personal aide and commander within the Frieza Force. Known for his vanity and elegant appearance, Zarbon conceals a monstrous transformed state that dramatically increases his combat power.
Zarbon accompanies Frieza to Planet Namek during the tyrant's quest for the Dragon Balls and immortality. Alongside Dodoria, he oversees the systematic intimidation and destruction of Namekian villages to locate the Dragon Balls. When Vegeta begins interfering with Frieza's plans, Zarbon is dispatched to deal with the renegade Saiyan. In their first encounter, Zarbon's elegant base form proves roughly equal to Vegeta, but his monster transformation overwhelms the Saiyan prince, and he beats Vegeta nearly to death before bringing him back to Frieza's ship for interrogation.
Their rematch tells a different story. Vegeta, having recovered and received a Saiyan zenkai boost from his injuries, is now significantly stronger. Zarbon is forced to transform again, but this time Vegeta dominates the fight. Despite Zarbon's desperate pleas, Vegeta kills him without hesitation, blasting him into the Namekian sea. Zarbon's death marks a turning point in the Namek Saga, as it signals that Vegeta has surpassed Frieza's elite and is rapidly approaching the tyrant's own level of power.
Zarbon serves as the first real measuring stick for Vegeta's growth on Namek. His two fights with Vegeta efficiently demonstrate both Vegeta's vulnerability and his rapid power escalation. The transformation mechanic, where a beautiful warrior hides a hideous powerup, introduces a recurring Dragon Ball theme about appearances being deceiving.
As a character, Zarbon is defined by his vanity. He despises his monster form because it ruins his handsome appearance, and he only uses it as a last resort. This reluctance to embrace his full power contrasts sharply with Vegeta's eagerness to push beyond every limit. Zarbon's loyalty to Frieza is pragmatic rather than ideological; he serves the strongest being in the universe because it benefits him. When that arrangement no longer protects him, he has nothing to fall back on.
