Yamcha the Desert Bandit

EpisodeEp. 5

Deep in the scorching Diablo Desert, Goku faces his first real martial arts opponent: Yamcha, a feared bandit with a devastating technique called the Wolf Fang Fist. But the desert warrior has a crippling secret weakness.

Fangs and Fists in the Desert

With Oolong now tagging along, Bulma forces him to stay by feeding him a special candy that causes stomach distress whenever she makes a certain sound. Their boat runs out of gas, and after losing all of Bulma's DynoCaps, the group is stranded on foot in the Diablo Desert. Bulma collapses from exhaustion in the relentless heat.

From a rocky perch, a blue shapeshifting cat named Puar spots the travelers through a telescope and alerts his partner. A long-haired swordsman rides in on a Jet Squirrel and introduces himself as Yamcha, the Desert Bandit, demanding money or capsules. Oolong recognizes Puar as a former classmate from Shapeshifting Academy, a place where Oolong was apparently a notorious bully.

Yamcha draws his sword and engages Goku, who fights back with his Power Pole. The two trade blows evenly until Yamcha unleashes his signature technique, the Wolf Fang Fist, a rapid-fire barrage of punches that sends Goku crashing through several rock formations. Just as Yamcha prepares to finish Goku off with a second attack, Bulma stirs and opens her eyes. The moment Yamcha sees her face, he freezes, stammers, and flees the scene entirely. Bulma, having caught only a glimpse of the handsome bandit, immediately develops a crush. Back at his hideout, Yamcha confesses to Puar that he has a paralyzing fear of women and swears revenge against Goku.

The Wolf Fang Fist Strikes

This is the series' first proper martial arts battle, and it delivers. Yamcha's Wolf Fang Fist is the first named special attack used in combat, and watching Goku get blasted through rock formations raises the stakes significantly. Unlike previous opponents, Yamcha actually hurts Goku.

The comedic payoff is equally strong. After a genuinely tense fight sequence, the fearsome desert bandit is undone simply by making eye contact with a girl. His panicked retreat is the perfect Dragon Ball subversion: the tougher the fighter, the more absurd the weakness. Puar and Oolong's shapeshifting duel, flyswatter versus fly, adds a clever parallel battle between the sidekicks.

A Rival, a Partner, a Future

Yamcha and Puar make their franchise debut here, beginning as villains before their inevitable switch to allies. The Wolf Fang Fist becomes Yamcha's signature move throughout the entire series. His fear of women is not just a gag; it directly motivates his desire for the Dragon Balls and foreshadows his eventual relationship with Bulma. This is also the first episode where Goku faces a skilled martial artist rather than a monster or common thug, signaling the shift toward the fighting-focused storytelling that will define Dragon Ball.
