Goku arrives at Kame House to begin training under Master Roshi, but the old hermit has one condition: bring him a pretty girl. While Goku fumbles the assignment, a small bald boy crosses an ocean to request the same training.
Goku races toward Kame House on the Flying Nimbus, passing over the jungle where Bulma, Yamcha, Oolong, and Puar have crash-landed their airship. He arrives at the island to find Master Roshi glued to an exercise video on television, completely oblivious to the world. After shouting in the old man's ear, Goku announces he wants to train. Roshi agrees but sets a condition: Goku must find him a pretty young woman first.
Goku's attempts are hilariously off-target. His first candidate is an enormous muscular woman who sends Roshi diving behind furniture. His second is a beautiful girl who turns out to be a mermaid, one who punches Roshi in the eye when he tries to charm her. Roshi sends him out again with more specific instructions: find someone like the last girl, but without flippers.
Meanwhile, a small bald boy has been traveling solo through jungles and across the ocean in a tiny boat. He arrives at Kame House by crashing headfirst into the sand. His name is Krillin, and he has come from the Orin Temple seeking training from the legendary Turtle Hermit. Roshi initially refuses, but Krillin wins him over with a stack of adult magazines. Roshi then tells both boys that if they can find him a suitable young woman together, he will accept them both as students. Krillin eagerly hops onto the Flying Nimbus and falls straight through, confirming his heart is not quite pure enough for the cloud.
Goku's failed girl-finding missions are comedy gold. Each attempt perfectly illustrates his complete inability to understand what Roshi is asking for: he evaluates candidates based solely on whether they are female and willing to come. The mermaid scene, where Roshi gets punched square in the eye for his advances, is a perfect encapsulation of the hermit's character.
Krillin's entrance is deliberately understated. He crashes into the sand, gets pulled out by Goku, and immediately starts scheming. His bribe of adult magazines to win Roshi's favor establishes him as the polar opposite of the earnest, innocent Goku: clever, self-interested, and pragmatic. The Nimbus rejecting him cements the contrast beautifully.
Krillin's debut is a landmark moment. He will become Goku's closest friend, training partner, and the emotional heart of the franchise for decades. The rivalry between the two boys, hinted at by Krillin's scheming personality, will push both to grow as fighters. This episode also marks the start of the Tournament Saga, shifting the series from adventure to structured martial arts training. Master Roshi's lecherous conditions for accepting students establish a running gag that persists throughout the entire franchise.
