Months of training come to a close as Goku and Krillin shed their Turtle Shells, receive their signature uniforms, and travel to Papaya Island for the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.
As months of relentless training pass in a montage of sweat and struggle, Goku and Krillin grow noticeably stronger. They finally push the massive boulder Roshi challenged them with, only for their master to reveal that the routine itself was the secret of the Turtle Hermit style all along. Rather than teaching them specific techniques, Roshi built their existing abilities to extraordinary levels.
Meanwhile, Yamcha returns from solo wilderness training just in time to save Bulma from an oncoming truck in West City. With the tournament one day away, Roshi tells the boys to remove their weighted shells. The difference is immediate: both feel impossibly light and fast. Launch presents them with new suits, and the trio heads to the airport bound for Papaya Island.
At the tournament grounds, Goku reunites with Yamcha, Bulma, Oolong, and Puar. Yamcha has signed up to compete as well. Roshi registers both boys, and the next morning he presents them with their official Turtle School uniforms, the orange gi that will become Goku's signature look. With 137 competitors and only eight spots in the finals, the elimination round awaits.
The most significant moment comes when Roshi explains his teaching method. The Turtle School style does not have its own set of forms or techniques. Instead, it amplifies whatever skills a student already possesses. This philosophy sets Roshi apart from traditional martial arts masters and explains why his students develop such diverse fighting styles later on.
When Goku and Krillin remove their Turtle Shells for the first time in months, the sudden freedom of movement is electric. Their bodies have adapted to the constant resistance, making normal gravity feel like nothing. It is a simple but effective visual payoff for episodes of grueling preparation.
This episode marks the debut of the Turtle School Uniform, the orange gi with the turtle kanji that becomes Goku's signature outfit for the remainder of Dragon Ball, throughout Dragon Ball Z, and into Dragon Ball Super. The group's arrival at Papaya Island also sets the stage for the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, the first major tournament arc in the franchise.
