With the tournament behind him, Goku sets off to find the Four-Star Dragon Ball. Along the way, he reunites with Nam and helps free his village from a drought caused by a dam of Merry-Go-Round Gum.
The group parts ways outside the tournament grounds. Krillin stays with Master Roshi at Kame House, Bulma and Yamcha head back to West City, and Goku borrows the Dragon Radar to search for the Four-Star Dragon Ball, the memento he believes is his Grandpa Gohan. Riding the Flying Nimbus alone, Goku's adventure takes him over forests and deserts as the Red Ribbon Army Saga begins.
Goku stumbles upon a thirsty landscape and decides to cool off in a lake, only to spot Nam being carried away by a giant pterodactyl. After rescuing his old tournament rival, Goku learns that the water capsule Roshi gave Nam was only a temporary fix. The village's river has been dammed upstream, and the water supply is choked off entirely.
The culprits turn out to be a colony of Giras, creatures related to the Giran that Goku fought in the tournament. They built a dam out of Merry-Go-Round Gum to hoard the water for themselves. When the Giras refuse to cooperate and threaten Nam, Goku steps in and defeats them. He then fires a Kamehameha at the gum dam, shattering it and restoring the river's flow. A dust storm temporarily drains the village again, but the legendary Roaming Lake appears on the horizon, delivering water to those who need it most.
The Giras and their Merry-Go-Round Gum dam create a satisfying callback to Goku's tournament fight against Giran. The same substance that once trapped him is now an obstacle he can destroy with a single Kamehameha, showing tangible growth since the quarterfinals. The Roaming Lake's arrival is a quietly beautiful moment, a mythical body of water appearing exactly when hope runs out.
The episode's opening does important housekeeping, sending each character on a separate path. Goku's solo journey with the Dragon Radar sets the tone for the Red Ribbon Army arc, while Krillin's continued training at Kame House and Bulma's return to the city keep the supporting cast active in the background.
Despite being the first episode of the Red Ribbon Army Saga, the army does not appear here at all. Instead, the episode serves as a bridge, wrapping up Nam's story arc from the tournament while launching Goku's new solo quest. The Roaming Lake is an anime-original legend that adds warmth to Nam's conclusion and the farewell to the Tournament Saga.
