Giras are a race of large, pterodactyl-like monster beasts native to Earth. They are sapient, capable of speech, and possess the unique ability to produce Merry-Go-Round Gum, a sticky substance they can spit from their mouths. Their most notable member, Giran, fought Goku in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.
Giras are large, winged creatures that resemble a cross between pterodactyls and dragons. They stand significantly taller than humans, possess leathery wings capable of flight, and have reptilian features including scaled skin, clawed hands, and elongated snouts. Despite their monstrous appearance, Giras are fully sapient: they can speak, form communities, and make strategic decisions. They live in their own village on Earth and sustain themselves on a diet of meat and milk.
Their most distinctive biological trait is their ability to produce Merry-Go-Round Gum, a sticky, elastic substance they can generate and expel from their mouths. This gum is remarkably durable, capable of binding even strong opponents in place. It serves both as a defensive mechanism and as a tool, as demonstrated when an entire community of Giras used it to dam a river, diverting the water flow for their own benefit.
The most famous Giras is Giran, who competed in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament and fought young Goku in the quarterfinals. Giran was a formidable opponent who used his Merry-Go-Round Gum to bind Goku completely, trapping the boy in a cocoon of sticky material that seemed impossible to escape. However, Goku broke free after his tail grew back during the match, unlocking a surge of power that shattered the gum and turned the fight decisively in his favor.
The Giras species appeared again when Goku traveled to find the cause of a water shortage affecting Nam's village. He discovered that a community of Giras had blocked the river using their Merry-Go-Round Gum, creating a dam that diverted water to their territory. Goku resolved the situation, restoring the flow to Nam's village. The entire Giras population was later killed by Super Buu's Human Extinction Attack but revived by the Dragon Balls, and they contributed their energy to Goku's Spirit Bomb against Kid Buu.
The Giras proved to be a resilient species. After being revived following Buu's rampage, they continued living on Earth into the far future. In Dragon Ball Online, set in Age 1000, Giras are still present on Earth, now wearing gloves and boots as signs of further integration into civilization. The Time Breakers even created Android Giras, mechanically enhanced versions of the species equipped with Time Breaker battle armor, demonstrating that their physical template was considered valuable enough to weaponize.
Notable Giras include Giran, the tournament fighter who gave young Goku genuine trouble with his Merry-Go-Round Gum; and various game-exclusive variants like Doku Giran (Poison Giran), Kingu Giran (King Giran), Dongiras, and Midgiras, all of which appeared as enemies in Dragon Ball video games. The Merry-Go-Round Gum technique itself achieved a degree of fame beyond the species, appearing as a learnable Super Skill in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 under the name Go-Go Gum, where fighters of any race can master the technique that once gave Goku so much trouble.
