A Champion Walks Away

The battle resumes with both fighters visibly drained. Tien gains the upper hand through sheer aggression, bicycle-kicking Jackie to the edge of the arena and attempting to push him out. Jackie fights back with everything he has, crushing Tien's hands and refusing to budge. After absorbing several headbutts, Jackie executes a desperate backward lean and springs over Tien, landing safely in the center of the ring.

Tien then unveils the Solar Flare, a blinding light technique that temporarily blinds Jackie and the entire crowd. Only those wearing sunglasses, Master Shen and the announcer, are unaffected. Tien uses the opening to knee Jackie in the back of the neck, dropping him unconscious. The announcer counts to nine before Jackie somehow rises.

What follows is not a technique but a conversation. Jackie tells Tien he is one of the most gifted fighters he has ever faced but that his potential is being wasted under Shen's influence. Shen, growing suspicious, eventually confirms that Jackie Chun is Master Roshi in disguise. With his identity exposed and his message delivered, Roshi walks out of the ring. He declares that his era has ended. Tien privately acknowledges that Roshi was not afraid, and was likely holding back.

The Brightest Light, The Longest Shadow

The Solar Flare is a game-changing introduction. It bypasses all physical defenses by targeting the eyes, and its effect on the entire crowd demonstrates its area-of-effect power. That Jackie survives the follow-up attack on a nine-count makes his endurance all the more impressive.

Roshi's voluntary exit is the emotional core of the episode. He does not lose. He chooses to step aside, passing the torch to the next generation. His parting words to Tien about having a conscience plant the seeds that will eventually turn Tien away from the Crane School. Shen dismisses the forfeit as cowardice, but Tien knows better, and that quiet recognition matters more than the win itself.

The End of Jackie Chun

This episode marks the permanent retirement of the Jackie Chun persona. Master Roshi entered the previous tournament to show his students they had room to grow. Now, with Goku having surpassed him, the disguise serves no purpose. His walkout is one of the series' most graceful exits for a character arc.

The Solar Flare becomes a recurring technique throughout Dragon Ball, later adopted by Goku, Krillin, and others. Tien's internal conflict between Shen's teachings and Roshi's wisdom reaches a critical point here, setting up his eventual turn during the finals.
