Goku trains under Mr. Popo to eliminate wasted movement in his fighting. When Kami finally reveals himself, Goku attacks, mistaking him for King Piccolo. Kami explains that he and Piccolo were once a single being, split apart so he could become Earth's Guardian.
Mr. Popo begins teaching Goku about discipline and efficiency in combat, pointing out the redundant movements that telegraph his attacks. At Kame House, Tien Shinhan vows to train relentlessly so he can challenge Goku at the next World Martial Arts Tournament. In a nearby forest, Piccolo Jr. encounters park rangers who stumble upon a dead bear. The young Namekian destroys one ranger's gun and deflects bullets from the others, sending them fleeing in terror.
Impressed by Goku's determination, Kami steps out of the shadows and reveals himself. Goku's reaction is immediate and violent. Kami's face is identical to King Piccolo's, and Goku lunges at him in fury. Mr. Popo intervenes and explains that this is not the demon king. Kami then shares his history: long ago, he and King Piccolo were one being, a Namekian who wished to become Earth's Guardian. To purify himself for the role, he expelled all evil from within, and that darkness took physical form as King Piccolo. Kami offers to revive Shenron so Goku's fallen friends can be wished back, but only if Goku agrees to stay and train with Mr. Popo. Goku accepts without hesitation.
Kami's revelation fundamentally reframes the King Piccolo conflict. The demon king was not some ancient monster from another world. He was the discarded evil of the very being charged with protecting the Earth. This connection means that Kami and Piccolo's fates are intertwined: if one dies, the other perishes as well, and with Kami goes the Dragon Balls.
Kami reveals that Korin deliberately withheld the truth about his connection to King Piccolo because the cat hermit "wanted to be funny." This detail adds a lighter moment to an otherwise heavy revelation and reinforces Korin's mischievous personality.
This episode is one of the most important in Dragon Ball's mythology. It reveals Kami as the creator of the Dragon Balls, explains the shared origin of Kami and King Piccolo, and establishes the life-link between them. The implication that killing Piccolo Jr. would also kill Kami and destroy the Dragon Balls becomes a central tension for the saga that follows.
