Piccolo is a Namekian warrior who began his existence as the reincarnation of King Piccolo, spawned as a final act of vengeance against Goku. Over the course of the series, he transforms from a sworn enemy of Earth's heroes into one of its most dedicated protectors, serving as a mentor to Gohan and a key fighter in virtually every major conflict.
Piccolo came into being during the closing moments of King Piccolo's defeat at the hands of young Goku. The dying Demon King expelled an egg containing his reincarnation, transferring all of his power and hatred into this final offspring. The child who hatched carried his progenitor's memories and desire for revenge, training relentlessly in isolation with the sole goal of killing Goku at the next World Martial Arts Tournament.
At the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, Piccolo entered disguised as "Ma Junior" and fought his way to the finals, where he faced Goku in one of the most destructive battles the tournament had ever seen. Despite unleashing devastating techniques including his signature beam attacks and even growing to colossal size, Piccolo was ultimately outmaneuvered and defeated. Goku, however, chose to spare his life, giving him a Senzu Bean so he could recover.
This act of mercy planted the first seeds of change within Piccolo. When the Saiyan Raditz arrived on Earth and proved too powerful for Goku to face alone, Piccolo formed an uneasy alliance with his old rival. During that battle, Piccolo developed the Special Beam Cannon and sacrificed Goku's life along with Raditz's by firing it through both of them. More significantly, Piccolo took custody of Goku's young son Gohan to train him for the arrival of the remaining Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa.
What began as a pragmatic decision to prepare a weapon for the coming invasion became the most transformative relationship of Piccolo's life. Over the course of that year of training, Piccolo developed genuine affection for the boy. When Nappa fired a lethal blast at Gohan during the Saiyan invasion, Piccolo threw himself in the way and died shielding the child. It was the first truly selfless act of his existence, and it cemented his transformation from villain to hero.
After being revived by the Namekian Dragon Balls on Planet Namek, Piccolo returned to play crucial roles in the battles that followed. On Namek, he received a power boost by fusing with the warrior Nail, a fellow Namekian who had been gravely wounded fighting Frieza. This fusion dramatically increased his combat ability, allowing him to challenge Frieza's second form on relatively even footing.
An even greater leap came during the Android Saga when Piccolo chose to reunite with Kami, the other half of his original Namekian self. This fusion restored the Nameless Namekian to wholeness and elevated Piccolo to a power level that briefly surpassed even the Super Saiyans. He used this strength to battle Android 17 in an extended fight that remains one of the most celebrated one-on-one encounters in the series, though neither combatant could claim a decisive victory before Cell interrupted.
During the Cell Games, Piccolo served primarily in a support role, but his tactical intelligence proved invaluable. He was among the first to recognize Gohan's hidden potential and understood the emotional triggers needed to unlock it. In the Buu Saga, Piccolo took on the role of strategist and guardian, protecting the younger fighters and guiding Goten and Trunks through their Fusion Dance training inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
In Dragon Ball Super, Piccolo continued to grow. He trained Gohan to regain his lost fighting edge and pushed his own abilities further. During the Tournament of Power, he fought alongside Gohan as a coordinated team, demonstrating a level of tactical synergy that few other pairs could match. His elimination from that tournament came only through self-sacrifice to protect his former student, echoing the same protective instinct he had shown years before against Nappa.
In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Piccolo received his most dramatic power upgrade yet. After unlocking a potential within himself with the help of Shenron, he gained access to a form called Orange Piccolo, which gave him strength rivaling that of Goku and Vegeta. This transformation allowed him to play a decisive role in defeating Cell Max, proving that the Namekian warrior could still stand alongside the series' most powerful fighters.
Piccolo's most enduring contribution to the Dragon Ball story is not measured in power levels or battle victories. It is his role as a father figure and mentor. His bond with Gohan defines both characters; Piccolo gave Gohan the tough training and emotional support that Goku, often absent in pursuit of his own battles, could not always provide. Piccolo later extended this role to Gohan's daughter Pan, becoming a doting caretaker who would go to extraordinary lengths to ensure her safety.
As a fighter, Piccolo is defined by his intelligence and versatility. His Namekian physiology grants him abilities that other warriors lack, including limb regeneration, heightened hearing, and the capacity to fuse with other Namekians. His signature techniques include the Special Beam Cannon, a concentrated piercing beam that requires charge time but delivers immense penetrating force; the Hellzone Grenade, which surrounds an opponent with energy spheres before converging them all at once; and the Light Grenade, a powerful explosive blast. He is also a skilled user of the Multi-Form technique and can stretch his limbs to strike from unexpected distances.
Beyond combat, Piccolo serves as the moral conscience of the group in many situations. He is often the voice of reason when others act impulsively, and his calm demeanor under pressure has saved the team from rash decisions on multiple occasions. His transformation from a demon king's spawn driven by hatred into one of Earth's most reliable defenders stands as one of the most compelling character arcs in the entire Dragon Ball franchise.
