After another loss to Mr. Popo, Goku is sent back in time through the Time Room. He meets the young Master Roshi and Master Shen, and trains under their legendary teacher Mutaito, learning the concept of spirit energy by splitting a waterfall in two.
Goku continues to lose sparring matches against Mr. Popo, who decides it is time for an unconventional approach. Using the Time Room on the Lookout, Mr. Popo sends Goku back through time to an era when Master Roshi and Master Shen were young students. Goku arrives at the training academy of their teacher, the legendary Master Mutaito, the same warrior who originally sealed King Piccolo centuries ago.
Goku challenges Mutaito to a fight and is soundly defeated, despite Mutaito not even standing up properly during the exchange. The old master then introduces Goku to the concept of spirit energy, demonstrating it by parting a waterfall down the middle with nothing but focused will. Meanwhile, in the present, Tien grows restless and contemplates visiting Korin Tower to train as Goku and Roshi once did. Krillin, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu haul boulders as part of their own conditioning. Back in the past, when the young Crane Hermit kidnaps a woman named Fanfan, Goku's anger allows him to tap into spirit energy for the first time, but he cannot reproduce the feat afterward.
Meeting Mutaito gives Goku a direct connection to the lineage of martial arts that shaped the world he lives in. Mutaito sealed King Piccolo using the Evil Containment Wave, the same technique that killed Master Roshi. Training under the original master adds historical depth to Goku's development and links his growth to the broader legacy of Earth's defenders.
The young Roshi and Shen are already showing the personality traits that will define them as adults. Roshi is earnest but easily distracted, while Shen displays a selfish streak that foreshadows his eventual fall into villainy. One of Shen's companions bears a strong resemblance to a young Mercenary Tao.
The Time Room is a unique training device that allows Goku to learn from figures who lived centuries before him. Spirit energy becomes an essential component of his fighting ability going forward. This anime-original episode deepens the lore of the Dragon Ball universe by showing the origins of the Turtle and Crane schools during a more peaceful era.
