The Victor

EpisodeEp. 148

With every limb broken and a hole in his chest, Goku launches himself skyward at the last instant, headbutting Piccolo for a ring-out victory. Healed by a Senzu Bean, Goku shocks everyone by feeding one to Piccolo, then declines Kami's offer to become Guardian and flies off with Chi-Chi.

Champion Against All Odds

Piccolo systematically destroys Goku's remaining functional limbs, leaving him unable to move. Kami begs Tien to kill him so that Piccolo will die too, but Goku shouts from the ground that he can still win without killing anyone. Nobody believes him. Piccolo rises into the air and fires the Explosive Demon Wave downward, a blast meant to vaporize Goku completely. Everyone mourns, believing Goku has been killed, with Chi-Chi devastated at the loss of her fiance.

But Goku had escaped at the very last second by flying. He uses the last of his energy to headbutt Piccolo in midair, and the announcer declares it a ring-out. Goku is the champion of the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. His friends rush to his side, overjoyed but terrified by his injuries. Yajirobe emerges from hiding with Senzu Beans, and one fully restores Goku's body. When Kami moves to kill the unconscious Piccolo, Goku stops him, pointing out that Kami's death would destroy the Dragon Balls and their entire safety net. Goku then stuns everyone by feeding a Senzu Bean to Piccolo, wanting to keep both Kami alive and a strong rival around. Piccolo departs with a vow of revenge. Kami offers Goku the position of Guardian of Earth, but Goku instantly declines and escapes on the Flying Nimbus with Chi-Chi clinging to his arm.

Victory, Mercy, and Departure

Goku's headbutt victory after being reduced to a broken body is the ultimate testament to his fighting spirit. The fake-out death sequence devastates both the characters and the audience before the reveal of his escape. Yajirobe's appearance with Senzu Beans provides the crucial healing. Goku's decision to save Piccolo is met with panic from his friends, but his reasoning is sound: killing Piccolo means losing Kami, the Dragon Balls, and the Eternal Dragon. Feeding Piccolo the Senzu is an act of strategic mercy that preserves Earth's mystical safeguards. Yamcha's quip about Goku and Piccolo becoming best friends is an unintentional prophecy for Dragon Ball Z. Goku declining the Guardian role and fleeing on the Nimbus is a perfectly in-character exit.

The End of an Era

This episode concludes the manga-adapted material of the original Dragon Ball anime. Goku's decision to spare Piccolo has enormous consequences, preserving the Dragon Balls and setting up their reluctant alliance in Dragon Ball Z. The 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament ends with Goku as champion for the first time, a milestone that closes a journey spanning all three tournaments. His refusal to become Guardian and departure with Chi-Chi transitions the series from martial arts competition to the married life and fatherhood that awaits in the next chapter.
