Wedding Plans Go Up in Smoke

After leaving the tournament, Goku and Chi-Chi fly to the Ox-King's castle on the Flying Nimbus. Chi-Chi's father is overjoyed by the news of their engagement and leads them to the treasure chamber to present Chi-Chi with her mother's wedding dress, a family heirloom passed down through three generations. Preparations begin immediately, with decorations going up, the Ox-King rehearsing his speech, and Chi-Chi attempting to teach Goku how to dance.

The celebration is shattered when the ground begins to shake and flames burst from the earth, consuming the castle and surrounding countryside. The Ox-King orders everyone to evacuate but runs back inside to save the wedding dress. Goku tries to follow, but the fire is too intense even for him. His Kamehameha fails to extinguish the flames. The Ox-King shouts from within the blaze that only the legendary Bansho Fan can put out this fire. Goku recalls Master Roshi once mentioned the fan but threw it away. Thinking quickly, Goku takes Chi-Chi to Fortuneteller Baba, who despite suffering from a cold, directs them east to Octagon Village. There, Goku meets pig villagers Jasmine and Oonaan, learns about Oolong's embarrassing expulsion from their village, and discovers a rock formation depicting the Bansho Fan at the bottom of the Bansho Spa, pointing toward a new lead.

Flames and a Frantic Search

The Ox-King's emotional presentation of the wedding dress, a treasured family heirloom, makes its endangerment all the more urgent. When the fire erupts, the Ox-King's parental instinct to protect his daughter's connection to her late mother drives him back into the inferno. Goku's Kamehameha failing against the flames establishes that this fire is supernatural, not something brute force can solve. Fortuneteller Baba's guidance sends the couple on a quest that connects back to early Dragon Ball lore. The detour to Octagon Village provides comedy through the pig villagers' antics and reveals more about Oolong's past.

From Tournament to Adventure

This episode begins the anime-original filler arc that bridges Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. The supernatural fire at Fire Mountain echoes the very first time Goku visited this location as a child. The Bansho Fan quest gives Goku and Chi-Chi a pre-wedding adventure that tests their partnership. Goku eating a banquet despite having consumed a Senzu Bean hours earlier contradicts the established ten-day appetite suppression, a continuity detail fans have noted. The episode establishes the pattern for the remaining filler: lighthearted adventures before married life begins.
