Yajirobe delivers a critical slash across Vegeta's back, buying Goku the opening he needs. In a desperate gambit, Goku instructs the dazed Gohan to look up at the Power Ball still radiating Blutz Waves in the sky. Gohan obeys and begins transforming into a Great Ape, growing to monstrous proportions as Vegeta panics and tries to prevent the change.

Being half-human, Gohan retains slightly more awareness as a Great Ape than a pure Saiyan would, and Goku manages to direct his son's attacks toward Vegeta. The Saiyan prince focuses all his remaining energy on evading Gohan long enough to sever his tail. He eventually succeeds using a Destructo Disc, but Gohan's massive body falls directly on top of him as the boy shrinks back to normal. This final impact breaks Vegeta completely.

Barely alive, Vegeta activates his space pod's homing beacon. Krillin intercepts him with Yajirobe's katana, ready to deliver the killing blow. But Goku telepathically stops him, arguing that killing Vegeta would only mirror the violence the Saiyan embraces. He wishes to plant seeds of mercy and love in Vegeta's heart, believing they will grow over time. He also admits his Saiyan blood yearns for a future rematch. Krillin reluctantly lets Vegeta go, and the battered prince swears revenge as his pod blasts off into space.

Goku's plea for mercy is one of the most consequential moments in Dragon Ball history. Allowing Vegeta to live sets into motion everything that follows: the race to Namek, the battles against Frieza, and eventually Vegeta's long transformation from villain to family man and reluctant hero.

The Funimation dub notably rewrites Goku's motivation. In the original Japanese version, Goku spares Vegeta primarily because he wants a rematch. The dub crafts a more compassionate speech about exposing Vegeta to kindness, creating a fundamentally different characterization of Goku that persists throughout the English version of the series.

Goku's prediction that Vegeta may someday show mercy and sacrifice himself for others eventually comes true during the Buu Saga's "Final Atonement," where Vegeta destroys himself trying to protect his family. The payoff spans hundreds of episodes, making this moment of mercy one of the series' greatest long-term narrative investments.

The Saiyan Saga ends here with a battered Earth and a scattered cast, setting the stage for the journey to Namek.
