Puzzles, Tricks, and Dragon Balls

Goku's Dragon Ball hunt leads him to a fortified compound belonging to a mob boss named Vodka. Two of the remaining Dragon Balls are locked inside. Goku tries diplomacy first, walking in and politely asking to trade for them. Vodka and his thugs laugh at the intruder, but their amusement evaporates when Goku sends one henchman flying into a wall with a casual shove. The mob boss retreats behind a domed energy shield at his desk, which Goku punctures with a single finger.

Before things escalate further, Mercenary Tao steps forward. The cybernetic assassin remembers Goku's strength all too well and has no intention of fighting him directly. Instead, Tao detaches one of his robotic hands, spills out three interlocking puzzle rings, and makes a deal: if Goku can take all three apart before dawn, the Dragon Balls are his. While Goku works, Tao confiscates Goku's jacket, which already contains four other Dragon Balls, and slips away with Vodka under cover of night.

Goku grinds through the puzzles with dogged persistence, refusing a hint from a sympathetic guard who offers to reveal the trick. By the time sunlight breaks, all three rings are separated. Goku uses Instant Transmission to catch up with Tao and Vodka on a distant lakeshore, cheerfully presenting the solved rings. Tao, utterly unwilling to provoke Goku into a real confrontation, congratulates him and hands over the jacket without protest. With six orbs in hand, Goku races off to find the seventh and final Dragon Ball, completing the set just as the narrator announces the Cell Games will begin on May 17th.

Brains Over Brawn

This episode is a delightful change of pace. Instead of a battle, Goku's obstacle is a set of interlocking metal rings. It is a test of patience, not power, and Goku's refusal to cheat when the guard offers help reveals a core aspect of his character. He values earned victories over shortcuts, even when the stakes are trivial.

Mercenary Tao's strategy here is actually quite clever for a villain who knows he is outmatched. By turning the encounter into a puzzle challenge, he buys himself time to escape. It is survival instinct dressed up as gamesmanship, and it works just long enough to matter. The fact that Goku bears him no ill will afterward makes the scene even more entertaining.
