A more powerful version of the Earth Dragon Balls created by the Nameless Namekian before splitting into Kami and King Piccolo, capable of granting any wish but scattering across the universe afterward.
The Black Star Dragon Balls are visually similar to the standard Earth Dragon Balls, measuring roughly 7.5 centimeters in diameter, but they bear black stars instead of the usual red ones. They were created by the Nameless Namekian before he separated into Kami and King Piccolo, making them older and more powerful than the Earth Dragon Balls that Kami later crafted.
When gathered, the Black Star Dragon Balls summon Ultimate Shenron, a dragon with virtually no restrictions on his wish-granting power. Unlike the regular Shenron, Ultimate Shenron can fulfill wishes that involve killing people and performing feats far beyond what Earth's dragon can accomplish. The Black Star Dragon Balls also do not turn to stone after a wish is granted, meaning they can technically be used again immediately if all seven are present.
To counterbalance their extraordinary power, the Black Star Dragon Balls carry a devastating consequence. After a wish is granted, the balls scatter across the entire universe rather than simply across a single planet. If they are not collected and returned to the planet where the wish was made within one year, that planet will explode from the accumulated negative energy. This side effect can only be reversed by using a set of regular Dragon Balls.
The Black Star Dragon Balls became permanently inert when Piccolo chose to remain on Earth and die during its destruction, severing their connection to their creator. His sacrifice ensured the dangerous artifacts could never be misused again.
The Black Star Dragon Balls were used only twice in Dragon Ball GT before Piccolo's death destroyed them forever.
The Pilaf Gang infiltrated the Lookout and gathered the Black Star Dragon Balls, intending to wish for world domination. When Goku caught them in the act, a panicked Pilaf accidentally wished for Goku to be turned back into a child. The wish was granted, and the balls scattered across the universe. The irony of Pilaf's situation was significant: even if he had successfully wished for world domination, the planet he intended to rule would have been destroyed within a year by the balls' side effect.
After Goku, Trunks, and Pan returned the Black Star Dragon Balls to Earth, Baby (who had taken control of Vegeta's body along with most of Earth's population) used them to wish Planet Tuffle back into existence in Earth's orbit. This triggered a new countdown toward Earth's destruction. With the deadline approaching and no time to gather the balls again, Piccolo made the decision to stay behind on Earth and die, permanently eliminating the Black Star Dragon Balls and Ultimate Shenron.
